I was drunk the night my ma got out of prison
and I went to pick her up in the rain,
but before I could get to the station in my pickup truck,
she got runned over by a damned ol' train.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me,
and I never minded standing in the rain.

You don't have to call me darlin', darlin'
you never even called me
well I wonder why don't you call me
you never even called me by my name!

(GOPisEvil: did you ever loudly and drunkenly sing that song while swaying back and forth, with your arms linked with the people around you?)

3. I can't count the number of times I have
loudly and drunkenly sung that song while swaying back and forth, with my beer mug raised in the air!

4. YAY!!! People know this song!!
YAY! I just sang it for my daughter and she laughed. She said "Um that's a silly song" and I said "that's the point!"

(When you're drinking it's even more fun to belt out.)

5. Y'all sound like good people!
And who hasn't swayed back and forth while singing this song loudly while being pissass drunk? I question people's integrity that hasn't done this. It's downright Unamerican to not have done this, but I digress.

6. Then I guess I must be Unamerican.
I don't have a clue as to what you're all talking about.

8. Dowload it sometime
David Allen Coe sings it. Title: "Best Damn Country Song Ever Written (You Never Called Me By My Name)"

Infectious stuff. You'll see why it's a yell along to it when you're drunk kind of song.

And I'm sure she was being tongue in cheek on the unAmerican thing.

9. Commie, why do you hate America
:P just kiddin'
From what I understand, the youngsters down in southern Illinois would have no problem with this scene. I dated a guy who went to the U of I in Champaign and he said that the surrounding area was a little scary. The preferred greeting for the guys was "Hey Goat". Personally, I'd be a little pissed if someone greeted me as a goat, but maybe that's just me  :)

12. Props to the song's writer, Steve Goodman...
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 01:44 PM by KrazyKat
Who also wrote the classic "City of New Orleans." Goodman died of leukemia on September 20, 1984.
