Man Dies After Winning Tequilla Drinking Contest (Drank Over 50 Shots!)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- The 21-year-old winner of a competition to drink the most tequila died and three other contestants were gravely ill in the hospital, officials said.

Ricardo Ivan Garcia drank more than 50 shots of tequila Sunday night at Santo Domingo's Blanc, Dance and Lounge discotheque to win the prize of $330 at a Mexican night celebration.

But he was taken ill, hospitalized and died within hours, apparently from heart failure brought on by alcohol poisoning, public prosecutor Jose Hernandez Peguero said on Monday.

Three other contestants remained in serious condition in the hospital, family members said.

but seriously, this is a horrible thing, in college, I was a resident assistant, and we had our door banged on at 3 am. Turns out two roomies had a drinking contest and one guy CHUGGED a fifth of whiskey...don't ask me how, but he did, and had to be rushed to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. They had to completely transfuse all his blood, and it was still touch and go for a while...but he did survive.

Young people don't know how fast alcohol can kill them. There are fatalities every year on college campuses. It's very sad and a huge risk.

Even a couple of shots taken quickly in succession can make a person dangerously sick.

In fact, I look back on that part of my life with much trepidation at the multitude of mistakes I made. oh well.

13. Saw That Happen When I Was In College

At a bar near a naval training station, i saw a guy about my size (pretty skinny then!) win a drinking game of shots of Jack. I don't know if he won or if the game was over yet, but suddenly there was a big commotion in the corner and the guy was on the floor, not breathing.

Some other Navy guys tried mouth to mouth and they called an ambulance, but he NEVER even so much as twitched a muscle the whole time. He was taken to the hostpital and we saw in the paper the next day he had died.

Methinks one takes drinking too seriously if one dies from a single incident of it. Not a good thing.
