36. Line cook at Coco's
Me and two other guys would cook 500 to 700 dinners to order in 3 hours. Coco's has that semi-open kitchen where you can see the cooks from about the chest up but my co-workers would stand on the grill (the moulding actually) and smoke reefer then blow the smoke straight up into the hood -- they pretended to be changing the vent filters.

People would send back their 'liver and onions' and say it was gross. I was never sure what to do about that.

There is a pan or a bucket in many kitchens called 'save for well'. What happens is if meat is sent back for being overcooked it goes in the bucket until someone order "well done" then it gets re-heated and served. Tip: order your meat medium-well or rarer.

25. ditto
for three weeks. on the day I quit they tried to promote me to assistant manager.

I was 19.

luckily, the manager knew I only needed a job for a month. unluckily, she neglected to tell the assistant managers. so they were pissed.

my favourite moment was when I guy came in and complained that it looked like we'd put day old hamburger into the chili. uh, pretty much. it's 99cents, you want filet? he wanted someone fired for messing with his chili that he had for lunch every day.

apparently he'd never noticed that the meat every day was the over-cooked burger from the night before...

28. Me too...
Kentucky Fried Chicken (it was still called that when I worked there) was my first over-the-table job. An invaluable experience that taught me two things:

-You can deep-fry anything and it'll still taste like KFC...

-Eating KFC for dinner every night for a week straight causes chest pains, even in a 16 year old...

35. Assistant manager at Hardee's-- first post-college job
I graduated college in 1991, right at the start of the last Bush recession. The only job I could find was Hardees. Yeah, it was that bad.

I lasted all of two months. The 50+ hour weeks, crappy working conditions and slave wages eventually did me in.

After that I took a temp job doing clerical work. I actually made more $$ doing that than I did in management at Hardees-- and the hours were MUCH better.

39. Not fast, but Luby's!!!!! Gah!!!
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 10:42 AM by fudge stripe cookays
The job that convinced me that food service and I would NEVER combine successfully. The Luby's on Thousand Oaks in NE San Antonio.

After that, I moved into retail and never looked back. Everyone at Luby's pretty much starts as a bus girl. You had to watch these stupid videos on how to do it.

Wearing orange polyester and nurse's shoes, cleaning macaroni and cheese out of baby high chairs, wiping God knows what off of tables....one of the most disgusting things I EVER had to do for a buck.

Plus, the supervisor was this complete BITCH named Rose. I hated that woman with a purple passion.

One night, I got to sub for the gal at the bread and rolls counter on the line and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. But then it was back to bussing. I lasted approximately 2 weeks.

My last day was a Sunday (the busiest of the week, right after church). Rose had bitched at me for something, and that was it. I went home for lunch, and never went back. They kept calling my house, angry that I wasn't back yet, so I told em what they could do with the job.

for about 2 days. Can't remember why, all I remember is how little it paid per hour, like 1.65 or maybe less.

Then Bagel Nosh, I really liked making Reubens and cleaning the grill.
After that it was a string of waitressing jobs at funky restaurants. Fave - a Greek place that no longer exists.

68. Good God! I didn't think anyone else would say that besides me!
I was their AM prep cook summer of '85, right after graduating high school. (Scenic Tacoma, WA)

It was really a pretty dreamy job for a kid's first time--put a roast in the over every hour and a half or so, make 2 trays of chocolate chip cookies (the dough was delicious), and pretty much the rest of the shift was just chopping vegetables for the salad bar.

Occasionally I had to do something yucky like make a batch of potato salad (very smelly), but really it was a nice job--I had the place to myself for an hour or two every morning starting at 6:30, then one person came in around 9:30, then another couple around 11, then I was gone by noon or so. I only spent one day wrapping sandwiches as a pinch-hit for someone else, and only a couple days refilling the salad bar (carting ice, etc.)

I got to wear what I want, listen to the radio all morning, free soda, and then the rest of the afternoon free. The day I left for a long weekend in Santa Cruz, they let me come in at 4:00 AM and work till 10. They were nice even when I broke the can opener. :)

Compared to the following summer--AM maintenance in an amusement park cleaning garbage, hosing sidewalks etc. starting at 5 AM, which meant getting up at 4--it was a great gig.

I was 16 and they made me clean the chairs with a toothbrush and tooth pick. Getting those sesame seeds out of the chairs was hell. Did that my whole shift with another guy. I didn't get to run the slicer any because of my age, but I was a hell of a potato scrubber.
