How bad is it that I live on campus?
As far as dating goes. Be honest...

I have my own bedroom and a decent apartment. But it has "on-campus" stigma and is run by the university.

I have to move to the North Side ASAP.

1. At my college, almost everyone lived on campus
You were required to unlesss you met one of a couple specific criteria like being over a certain age, out of high school for a specific amount of time, were living with local relatives, or were married. For us, you had the best chance of getting a date if you lived on campus. The off campus people often felt disconnected from campus life. All the parties were on campus too so it was convient to live on campus from that angle too.
I don't know how things are at colleges where a large number of people live off campus.
Could you give us more info?

2. Well, I'm in grad school...
and there's no parties on my campus.

I'm 24 and I'm just wondering what my non-campus peers think about dating someone on campus.

Perhaps I am just too self conscious. But seriously, this neighborhood is not safe around campus. I am at IIT in Chicago. I am going to move to the North Side and commute next year. I can't stand it here...there is nothing ever going on.

dude

you are in an iffy sort of area. i'm from a bad neighborhood and I wouldn't want to stumble home drunk in the middle of the night around there.

the north side would probably work out for you . . . maybe somewhere around depaul (if you can afford it) or lakeview.

i take it you're on the young side? if so, these communities will work for you.

try the irish bar on lincoln ave. right before the el tracks in lincoln park. it's a college bar and they have $1 draft/$5 pitchers on monday nights . . . they have NUMEROUS bars/clubs/nitelife with LOADS of young college-type people.

what are you studying?

if you ever have any questions about the city, feel free to email me.

checked out the new student center bldg over there at IIT. pretty intense.

4. Well, I hang out on the North Side all the time...
The South Side I guess has a stigma. It's really not that bad on campus here, but off campus...it's improving.

I will be on the North Side next year, I just don't know where or with whom.

5. most of it does
and a lot of the south side gets a bad rep.

lately though, the north side hasn't been doing too good what with recent spike in murders . . .

there are some good south side neighborhoods, and although lots of them are gang-infested, they usually leave you alone.

6. My sister lives near the Cumberland "L" station
She said that it was a very safe neighborhood and her rent is affordable. It was even more affordable when she lived about a mile away, but she doesn't drive in Chicago and had a couple of spooky incidences on her walks to and from the station after dark.

7. It's not that I feel unsafe here...
I just feel like a nerd for living on campus.
