Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 08:27 PM by NightTrain
As such, I've been digging through my vinyl and CDs to figure out what to spin this Wednesday. I want to offer a mixed bag of what was going on musically during (primarily) the first half of the '80s.

So far, I've dug out such artists as the Human League, Donnie Iris, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, Musical Youth, Diesel, Thomas Dolby, The Dirt Band, Buckner & Garcia, The Stray Cats, Marshall Crenshaw, Cyndi Lauper, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Blondie, Terri Gibbs, Kim Wilde, George Benson, LL Cool J, Kim Carnes, Dead Or Alive, The Scorpions, The Clash, Culture Club, Men Without Hats, Chilliwack, Rupert Holmes, Randy Meisner, and LeRoux, among others.

The WHUS '80s show runs on Wednesdays from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern U.S. Time. Should prove an interesting two hours for me!

If you'd like to check the show out, go to http://whus.org/listen.htm

5. If you want some of the more indie/underground end of that era....
there was a lot of great punk rock that came out during that era.

Husker Du, Replacements, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, G.B.H., and Subhumans all had their heyday during that time.

20. Three Definitive Eighties Tracks:
Time Zone (Afrikka Bambaatta and Lohn Lydon):

"World Destruction"

Speak of the destruction. (x3)

This is a world destruction, your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
Countries are fighting with chemical warfare.
Not giving a damn about the people who live there.
Nostradamus predicts the coming of the Antichrist.
Hey, look out, the third world nations are on the rise.
The Democratic-Communist Relationship,
won't stand in the way of the Islamic force.
The CIA is looking for you.
The KGB is smarter than you think.
Brainwash mentalities to control the system.
Using TV and movies - religions of course.
Yes, the world is headed for destruction.
Is it a nuclear war?
What are you asking for?

This is a world destruction. Your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
The rich get richer.
The poor are getting poorer.
Fascist, chauvinistic government fools.
People, Moslems, Christians and Hindus.
Are in a time zone still searching for the truth.
Who are you to think you're a superior race?
Facing forth your everlasting doom.
We are Time Zone. We've come to drop a bomb on you.
World destruction, kaboom, kaboom, kaboom!

This is the world destruction, your life ain't nothing.
The human race is becoming a disgrace.
Nationalities are fighting with each other.
Why is this? Because the system tells you.
Putting people in faceless categories.
Knowledge isn't what it used to be.
Military tactics to control a nation.
Who wants to be a president or king? Me!
Mother Nature is gonna work against you.
Nothing in your power that you can do.
Yes, the world is headed for destruction.
You and I know it, cause the Bible tells you.
If we don't start to look for a better life,
the whole world will be destroyed in a time zone!

Speak of the destruction. (x3)

Killing Joke:

"Eighties"

Eighties - i'm living in the eighties
Eighties - i have to push, i have to struggle
Eighties - get out of my way, i'm not for sale no more
Eighties - let's kamikaze 'til we get there
And we sang
You do it this way
Eighties - by day we run by night we dance, we do
Eighties - i'm in love with the coming race
Eighties - i've got the best, i'll take all i can get
Eighties - i'm living for the eighties
Eighties - i'm living in the eighties - i push
Eighties - i'm living
Eighties - i'm living in the eighties - i struggle
Eighties - i'm living
Eighties - i'm living
Eighties - i'm living in the eighties
Eighties - i'm living in the eighties - i push
Eighties - push, push, struggle
Eighties - i'm living
Eighties - eighties - i'm living
Eighties - i'm living in the eighties - i push
Eighties - push, push, struggle
----------------------------------
(original lyrics)
Eighties - I'm living in the Eighties
Eighties - I have to push, I prostitute myself
Eighties - I saw the whole world getting anxious
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march
And we sang
In these Eighties
Eighties - I'm sitting on a table talking ideals
Eighties - I got the best, I'll take all I can get
Eighties - Here comes the savage day
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march
And we sang
In these Eighties
Eighties - I'm living in the Eighties - I push
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march
Eighties - I'm living in the Eighties - I struggle
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march
Eighties - I'm living in the Eighties - I push
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march
Eighties - I'm living in the Eighties - I struggle
Eighties - I saw the worlds begin to march

Frankie Goes to Hollywood:

"Two Tribes"

Ladies and gentlemen, let me present-
FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD
Possibly the most important thing.
This side of the world........

Oh yeah, well 'ard!.......

Let's go

<1>-When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score

Cowboy No. 1
A born-again poor man's son
On the air America
I modelled shirts by Van Heusen-yeah

You know

Working on the black gas

Switch off your shield
Switch off and feel
I'm working on loving-yeah
Giving you back the good times
Ship it out-out
I'm working for the black gas

We got two tribes
We got the bomb
We got the bomb-yeah
Sock it to me biscuits-now

Are we living in a land
Where sex and horror are the new Gods?
Yeah

When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score

26. I will weep and gnash my teeth in nostalgia if you play:
"Land Down Under"; Men at Work
"One Night in Bangkok"; Murray Head
"Video Killed the Radio Star"; The Buggles
anything by Adam Ant
anything by Thomas Dolby

Not saying they have artistic merit in the eyes (ears) of others, but those songs transport me through time to high school. Not a bad time, not a good time, but a lot of memories.

Just please, dear god, don't play Huey Lewis!

45. Guess what, y'all? I'm playing '80s music for FOUR hours, not two!

The D.J. who precedes the one I'm filling in for just had a death in her family and needed somebody to cover her 1-3 p.m. show on Wednesday. Since I was going to be there anyway from 3-5, I volunteered.

So, it looks like your truly and the 1980s will be ruling the WHUS airwaves for four big hours on Wednesday!

(For the record, all times mentioned are for the Eastern U.S.A.)
