Question about towing junk cars...
I just called a place that offered free junk-car removal, and the guy told me that they'd have to charge to remove my model of car...a 1980 VW Rabbit...because they'd have to remove the gas tank on it before they towed it.

This smelled like bullshit to me, so I told him I wasn't interested.

Can anyone tell me if I was right or wrong?

1. Never heard of it. Some junk yards will buy your car for @ 50 bucks and
come get it for free. Call around and ask.

2. That's what I thought...
It's not a great car, but they could use the parts for repairs, so they profit at least a little from getting the car.

3. News to me
Have you tried listing it on Freecycle? We got rid of a beater that way and it didn't cost us anything.

11. I may try that...
As long as somebody's willing to tow it themselves...
Thanks!

4. Gas tanks
have to be removed before the car can be crushed.

9. That makes sense...
Thanks for the info. The guy told me it had to be removed before he could tow it, so I'm glad I told him I wasn't interested. If I have to pay someone, I'd rather they be up-front about it.

7. The only problem is, we've misplaced the title...
Our house is a feng shui nightmare. I'm at the point where I don't care if we get a tax deduction or a little extra cash...I just need the breathing room!

Do you know of any charities that don't care about the title?

10. Apply for a duplicate title.
Just get the VIN number and apply. I'm suprised you found anyone to take it without a title, even with you paying extra.

12. Thanks...
I'll look into that. A dupe might cost extra, though...

14. feng Shui Nightmare LOL
I can so relate.

Call the Kidney Foundation, also call the local car tag office and they can give you the particulars on a lost title. If it's junked maybe you don't need one.

We have to have one hauled off too but I'll have a friend do it for the scrap fee. I wouldn't pay anybody to remove the gas tank first. you were the smart one GoG....

15. Thanks for the info!
The Kidney Foundation sounds like a great idea!

Did you know that I used to have three kidneys? I had to have the third one removed, because it didn't function properly, and kept getting infected. I always felt a little guilty that I'd been given an extra, yet I wasn't able to give it to someone who really needed it!

16. That extra one could come in handy
if it had worked. You can filter a lot of Guinness through three kidneys!

6. I had a rabbit around that date and there was no problem towing it.
Sounds like BS. Can you imagine every Rabbit that was sold during those years having to have the gas tank removed before it could be towed? Car sales wouldn't have lasted a year.

8. I had a 1980 Rabbit diesel that had to be towed several times
and never had the gas tank removed...

I think the guy was either not interested in having the parts, or thought I was a dumb broad, and wanted to get some money out of me.

17. Uh, this is when it's going for its "Last Tow"
You know, to the big used car lot in the sky?
Sounds like they weren't even going to mess with trying to part it out. just drag it away and shred it.

I was going to junk a truck last year. Called the scrap yard, and they not only wanted the gas tank removved, but the battery had to go, the oil, tranny oil, and rear gears all had to be drained and the radiator needed to be emptied, too.
