Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around

Just wonderin'.

I hate earworms.

1. Up until about a year ago, I thought it was 'build me *a* buttercup'

...which just goes to demonstrate the pitiful state of my critical listening and thinking skills. What the hell does THAT mean? And would it be up to code?

2. Baby, now that I've found you I can let you go
build my world around you
I need you so
baby even though
you don't need me, you don't need me

I saw the Foundations in 1967 in Cambridge, England. They were the lead in band to a Stevie Wonder Concert. I still have a couple of their 45's.
