I have to say they were considered a real joke back then (mind you, so was just about everything else in the appalling 80s)

3. Yes, but....

They were good, but bear in mind that, aside from "Cruel Summer", they really took off only after they paired up with hit-meister producers Stock, Aikman and Waterman, who produced so many popular 80's artists (Rick Astley, Dead or Alive). Kind of like the 80's Giorgio Moroder.
