One night years ago I was watching "Cops." I really don't watch it anymore, kinda got bored with it quickly.
But on this particular episode, they were having to arrest a guy who had assaulted someone pretty badly.
He was in a barber shop. He was well over six feet tall, big, beefy and thick, NAKED and incredibly sweaty. He was also high on PCP. He was raging mad and was NOT going to be arrested.
Imagine that. If you don't know, PCP is not a good thing for a person to be on when you are trying to put them in handcuffs.
Since he was naked and sweaty, he was slippery and there was nothing to grab hold of. The PCP made him freakishly strong and pretty impervious to pain. And mean as shit.
It took FIVE police officers almost fifteen minutes to get him cuffed and I believe they hog-tied him, too. By the time it was all over, the barber shop was totally trashed, all five cops were sweating and bleeding, and the guy they arrested was bleeding pretty badly from several big cuts.
I recall they did TRY use their batons once or twice, but the way they were struggling with him made it difficult. It involved more flat-out wrestling than anything else. Well, and the guy being arrested flinging cops halfway across the room, but they just kept coming back at him, like a video game.
When it was all over, I thought "Damn, those guys EARNED their pay that night." They didn't pepper spray him (I think that was before that was in wide use), could hardly use their batons, and had no tasers.
I have to say that was probably the hardest person to arrest I've ever seen. Any police officer who is just automatically whipping out that taser on people weighing 65 pounds and already cuffed or people taking too much at a salad bar needs to watch the arrest I described--required viewing.
