I love Pere Ubu's The Modern Dance!
I was listening to it last night before falling asleep. It's just a brilliant, brilliant album: Non-Alignment Pact, Laughing, Street Waves, Real World, Humor Me...

But I have a love-hate thing for Sentimental Journey, which uses the repeating sound of breaking glass as a percussion instrument. The most grating sound in the world, next to a screaming baby.

Anyone else in the Lounge like Pere Ubu? I feel so alone with my musical tastes.

1. LOVE 'em.
But then I'm from Cleveland.

Their drummer just got arrested Thursday night, BTW.

2. What'd he do?
Did you see them in the day? How 'bout Rocket from the Tombs?

3. I saw them a few times in the 70s
Once in Ann Arbor and a couple of times at Bookies in Detroit. Great shows every time.

They were no flash in the pan, either. Some of their more recent stuff, like Pennslyvania and St. Arkansas, is first rate.

4. In the day, I was like 6 years old.
I saw 'em plenty when they got back together in the mid/late '80s, though.

And as for the drummer, he didn't actually do anything. Overzealous cops smelled blood in the water at a regional music awards party and fucked with people. Steve was waiting for his girlfriend (who had the car keys), the cops told him to leave, he explained that he couldn't as his GF had the car keys, yadda yadda. This, of course immediately turned into one of those "you WILL respect my authority" things and got his ass hauled off.

5. Modern Dance was another record
that had its grooves worn out at my place. Saw David Thomas after they broke up... forget which of his incarnations it was. Great Record. Husband is a big fan of David Thomas and his various musical permutations.

Gawd, Ron, you're a youngin. ;)

BTW, ever heard of The Human Switchboard? They were also from that great Ohio triangle ( Akron?), I think. We loved those guys. Great organ and organ player, Myrna Marcarian. She still has a band called Ruby Fruit Jungle, I think, somewhere in NYC.

7. The one I actually listened to over and over and over and over and over
was 369 Degrees of Simulated Stereo. It actually took me a while to get used to the studio versions of Non-Alignment Pact and even Humor Me (though 369's version sound like it was recorded from the inside pocket of someone's overcoat.

11. oh we bow down before you
oh asthmatic one. ;)

You would probably have a heart attack if you saw the state some of our old records are in, then. Bet we paid less for it when it came out, though, and you were probably listening to hmmm, kiddie tapes/records/CDs then. Or did you have musically enlightened parents?

I am always fascinated by how, why and when people first came to be interested in music and how their tastes developed.

12. Rocket From the Tombs
did some re-union touring in 2003 with Richard Lloyd from Television taking Peter Laughner's place. Some fiery performances. They released a CD (Rocket Redux) of the set.

10. Great album.
I listened to Pere Ubu a lot during my post-punk Residents/Capt Beefheart/Snakefinger era. Even saw them live a couple of times.

I guess I'm going to have get out get a few of there discs.

Thanks for the memory.
