What's your most despised pop song of all time?
Mine is "The Piano Man" by Billy Joel. Every time I hear it, it is still excruciating. And they always insist on playing it at those dueling piano bars because piano players think it is some kind of sacred anthem. IT IS FREAKING UNBEARABLE. x(

Since the U.S. is apparently into torture now, maybe Rummy should take note, and add blasting "The Piano Man" to his torture repertoire.

14. ah too bad
it got overplayed, but in it's way is a great story/rock and roll history song. I still like Don McLean, and Vincent is a great song - very poetic. These songs were seminal when I was in high school.

The Madonna version on the other hand, ....

103. I also love "American Pie"
Don McLean ranks as among my favorite artists -a singer with talent, good lyrics and a strong social conscience. And "American Pie" is wonderful IMO

Then again Madonna's version was absolute garbage. But that's just my opinion

Damn, I despise that song. My SO loves it and turns it up whenever it comes on the car radio. That song is responsible for more fights.

Oh, my SO's favorite album of all time is 'Innagaddadavida', so I didn't fall for him because of his music collection. Otherwise, he's a wonderful person and a top notch investment broker. Oh, and hung like a bull moose.

3. Like A Virgin (Madonna)
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 11:38 AM by rocknation
It's bad enough that it's sung in a nasal whiney voice, and that it uses the word "virgin" purely for shock value. But it also marks the beginning of the made-for-MTV pop music genre, when looks would take precedent over talent and substance would be forced to the back of the bus by style.

44. neil diamond? one of my favorites!! great song too! oh well. :P

Where it began
I can’t begin to knowin’
But then I know it’s growin’ strong

Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Who’d have believed you’d come along

Hands, touchin’ hands
Reachin’ out
Touchin’ me
Touchin’ you

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined
To believe they never would

But now i
Look at the night
And it don’t seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurtin’ runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when I’m with you

Warm, touchin’ warm
Reachin’ out
Touchin’ me
Touchin’ me

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh, no, no

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined
I believed they never could
Sweet caroline

I heard that song about 1000 times when it first came out.

What a cloying piece of shit her version is. Dolly Parton's version had a longing quality to it that really suited it - she wrote it, after all - but when Ms. Houston got her claws on it, it turned into a shoutfest.

77. Not a big hit, but "I Want to be Rich", by Calloway
Terrible sentiment, and a horribly white-bread-ised form of 'soul' music. Makes Boys 2 Men sound like Slayer.

82. "Pour some Sugar on Me." I have no idea who is responsible,
but I'm hoping they die a slow, not TOO painful, but very, very, very
SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
death

Did I mention a slow, somewhat painful, death?

97. That would be Def Leppard.
And one of them did die, about 14 years ago.

But the song lives on. I love Def Leppard, and particularly the Hysteria album, but I have to admit that Pour Some Sugar On Me is not my favorite of their songs.

92. "PIANO MAN" IS ODIOUS.
That's one of the songs I'd classify as, "WTF do you think you are?" that's up there with, "Take It Easy" from the 70's:"I got seven women on my mind-four that wanna hold me, two that wanna stow me-one says she's a friend of mine".I also hate "Free Bird". And I don't mind saying so. These lyrics are like: "Well, babe, it's been a lotta laughs, but I gotta hit the road cause I'm a RESTLESS feller, can't get saddled down.Don't cry too hard." And the woman is probably saying, "So go, already!!"

HATE:"You Can't Hide Your Lyin' Eyes"

MOST PERSISTENT AND WRETCHED EARWORM: "I Just Called to say I Love You", "Silly Love Songs", "Our House", and worst of all, "Blinded by the Light." Is this a man singing about douche?? WTF is this song about? Holy Rollers? Curly-Whirly? WTF??

EARS AND EYES BLEEDING:"I Will Always Love You", the Whitney Version. "All By Myself", the Celine Dion version.

INTROSPECTIVE BULLS*IT:"What About me-it isn't fair- I don't have enough now I want my share"(showing age) and "I've Been to Paradise But I've Never Been to ME."

PHIL COLLINS:one exception-"This is the World We Live In".

"Life in a Northern Town". "I Wear my Sunglasses at Night". "Like a Rock". "All I need is the air that I Breathe and you". "Old Time Rock & Roll". "Sharp-Dressed Man". Sorry, El Fuego sweetie, you asked for one song. You should be an excorcist.

98. SHORT PEOPLE

Oh, did I mention, I'm short?

I'm just glad he had the good sense not to follow up that "hit" with "Black People", and "Girl People", and "Jew People", and "Gay People", and ...

But then again, it's OK to demean short people. WHat are they going to do about it? Kick you in the shins? Punch you in the kneecaps? Bite your calf?

Have you heard it? If you had, you'd quickly either change your minds about your choices or make this a close second. Seriously. I can't believe that made it out of the studio, and considering the drek that they put out on a daily basis, that's saying a lot.
