City 'cursed' by Millennium stone
Telegraph
(Filed: 02/03/2005)

Carlisle City Council is considering destroying a "Cursing Stone" created for the Millennium celebrations after claims that it is to blame for misfortunes of "biblical proportions" jinxing their city.

In the last five years the Cumbrian city has been struck by foot-and-mouth disease, deaths in January's floods, job losses and even a goal famine for the local football team.

City councillor Jim Tootle, now wants to destroy the curse by having the stone and its spell banished or exorcised by a priest.

He said: "Most people treat it as a bit of a joke, but when they start to sit down and think, there might well be something in it ... something is coming from this stone."
