Does everybody think they have unique weather?
Today, as I was walking into the office in the cold and snow, I heard someone behind me laugh and say "Another beautiful Michigan morning".

People in Michigan seem to delight in claiming that they have the coldest, crappiest, most unpredictable weather. I have never in my life known an area more perversely proud of its climate, and everyone is absolutely certain that this is unique to Michigan.

There are tons of Michigan weather jokes, for instance:
Q: How many seasons does Michigan have?
A: Two - winter and construction

But I grew up in upstate NY, which, as far as I can tell, has exactly the same climate as SE Michigan except we got more lake-effect snow.

And I lived for a time in The Netherlands, where I swear there are 15 different meteorological terms for "mostly cloudy with rain". If the Dutch talk about weather, I think their complaints are well-deserved.

Why the heck do people from Michigan think they're so unique, and can anyone tell me if this is a Michigan phenomenon or if every damn state thinks their climate is special????

1. All the Northern States that get snow have the same jokes
I live in PA and I love the false bravado regarding the act of driving in the snow...

3. I Have Lived in Michigan My Whole Life
So I can't speak to other states or anything, but I know that Michigan is the best state in every single possible way and I will hear no arguments on the subject.

Not everyone in Michigan likes the unbelievably insane, completely and totally unique weather that we get, but as they say here in Michigan, "Just wait five minutes and it will change!"

5. Well, maybe it's not so much certainty that it is unique to Michigan
as simply the fact that their coworkers would look at them strangly if they were commenting on Michigan weather and saying how typical this was of Georgian weather. {random thought}

Actually, having lived in or been in all 50, I know just what you mean.

7. same in Texas except it's in summer and about the heat, or
forsome reason Texans think they have some sort of patent on changeable weather, as in

"Well, if you don't like the weather, just hang around for an hour or so and it will change"

I keep telling them that other places have sudden weather changes too..no one seems to believe me....

but it is true that Texas is HOT, and it doesn't cool down at night either. Oppressive, yes but easier to drive in.

8. As far as Massachusetts is concerned.
I live in a higher altitude part of the state, so most of the big newscasts out of Boston don't include me...

Of course then there's Cape Cod, which is a whole other environment to itself...

9. Say....
"I have never in my life known an area more perversely proud of its climate"

You have obviously never lived in Minnesota. ;)

That winter and road construction is a Minnesota joke, you know.
