I was accepted to RIT, Northeastern, and Art Institute of Boston... not sure that art school appeals to me and I really don't want to go to RIT (even though I just got 6k a year towards tuition from them)...

I'm pretty sure I can imagine being in Boston, and BU is my first choice. It's so expensive though. We'll see what happens :)

177. Advice (take it or leave it)

If you are going to go into loan debt for college - do a little investigating - what is the rate of graduates to get a) good paying jobs; or b) into grad schools that lead to some job security.

The point is that going into debt for a school that opens lots of doors can be worth it. However, some schools are expensive and require a great deal of loan debt, but "buy" you not much more than a lesser expensive, but very good school.

When I did undergrad it was much less expensive than today. However, even back then the tuition was about 3-4 times more than the local state University. Same situation for several other private schools in the region. But, my UG school had a very high rate of folks going on to grad school - and good grad schools - while many of the other privates to which I refer had no better record than the state U. I am certain that what I got from my UG, both in preparation - and to some extent in prestige of the degree - opened the door years later for me to get into a top grad school in my field. Thus the investment in the UG for the more expensive college degree, paid off. However some of the similarly expensive schools would not have had that same pay off.

Point being, don't let loan debt frighten you off - but make sure that it is in a program that will likely "pay off" for you in the future more than a degree from a less expensive option.

Have you ever noticed that the newbies are often having the same debates we once had? Obviously many events have changed but the arguments seem to stay the same. There is always abortion, child suport, child care,schools and let's not even begin on elder care.

I'm not saying that it hurts to see new ideas.... maybe one of them will work. But I do think it's a shame to see the same argument over and over, seemingly with no end. I'm a silly idealist but wouldn't it be great to pull everyone togethor and work on a child care ctr. or some such thing?

how much that makes me smile, shugah. I think we both "appeared" on the scene (of DU) in the same general time frame. Back then I was doing a lot of heavy research/thinking/writing from home - and incorporated more DU time (mostly LBN and GD) time than I can possibly find these days. Funny, back then I barely came to the lounge, though I loved it when I was there - but the majority of my DU time was very serious. Now, with much less time, I read LBN in the wee hours.... and unwind at the end of the day... in the lounge. Am here more frequently, but the crowd that I knew - often isn't around. It is a "younger" (Duwise) crowd that has its own community.

I have always enjoyed your company. Very grounded, but with a passionate streak (or so you strike me via the written word) Wish I had the chance to "see" you more!
