Poll question: Why is N. Ireland so much more hotly contested here than Quebec?
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 07:13 PM by JVS
Seriously, why am I the only one who seems to give a shit about Quebec while a disparaging remark about the IRA will generate a flame-war of epic proportions?

# Choice 1 - We like Canada too much to be critical of its government, so we gladly overlook their mistreatment of Francophones
# Choice 2 - We hate the Francophones because they are French and thus are willing to overlook their suffering
# Choice 3 - We only care about foregners if they are white and speak English
# Choice 4 - Antipathy for Quebec is part of DU's legendary "raging anti-Catholicism"™
# Choice 5 - We hate them for their Poutine freedom
# Choice 6 - Nobody cares (period)

I edited so you can see the choices and just shout them out

3. Well, I could be wrong, but
there are only a gazillion sons and daughters of Hibernia in this country. How many Quebec-ers are here? (ps - I know it's not Quebec-ers, I do not know how to spell the real name)

Since they wouldn't come to their senses and ditch George III, they get to be stuck with 5 million insufferably haughty French pricks. :P

Seriously, though, I've had BAD experiences with Quebecois in my lifetime. I'm not very well-disposed toward their cause.

17. Yep.
I've never been to Quebec, so they might be better in their natural habitat, but we had several Quebecois exchange students when I was in high school. Worst nose-in-the-air, haughty, "culturally superior", holier-than-thou douchebags I ever had the misfortune to deal with. No joke, the French teacher at my high school said not even actual Parisians were as rude as these assbiters. To this day, I'd like to slug 'em in the face. :grr:

Well, him, or Mick Jagger.

19. You know the story behind the name?
I beleive it goes, they at first wanted it to be Bill one, then realized how much legislation it would take to change bill one from whatever it is..so they made it bill 101.

20. New England has a large French-Canadian population
especially Maine, NH, VT. Cambridge had a large French-Canadian population (ask sniffa-he is one) and a lot of the mill cities in Mass do too.

Montreal is wonderful, and I don't necessarily agree about the attitude. But then again, I'm not Canadian, and I don't understand the dynamic.

21. There are more Irish than French at DU?
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 09:47 PM by Ellen Forradalom
Or, more likely, Northern Ireland has garnered more attention in the US than Québec, thus leading more Americans (not just DUers) to have more opinions about Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland gets this attention because the strength and ruthlessness of the parties involved and the scale and duration of the violence.

22. Simply put, the Quebecois have only killed one man in the last 35 years.
That's just not going to cut it compared to Northern Ireland.
