Sims vs. Sims 2
Hallo. A few months ago, me and my SO bought the Sims. I of course loved it- and he enjoyed the concept- however, he didn't want to play it because of the lack of variety, in objects, faces, clothes, objects, actions, reactions, etc.

So he is thinking about purchasing the Sims 2, but hasn't completely made up his mind- he worries that it won't be much different, and therefore, a waste of money that could be better spent on a shoot-em-up game. ;-)

Anywho, I have looked at some screenshots, and it looks like the graphics are MUCH better. I tried reading a review but it was sooo long and drawn out, I honestly just got bored with it. Besides- I think it is better to get the opinions of regular people who have purchased the game.

So can anyone tell me- what are the differences, and how much better is the game? Is there more variety with objects and clothing and Sims appearances?

I understand the game gets more in depth when it comes to aging, which I think is really cool.

I'm sure we will end up buying it soon- but I would love some opinions!!

Thanks in advance! :)

1. I've heard it's a great game (but I have not tried it out myself)
If you are looking for an even geekier more addicting game, then try out World of Warcraft.

2. I looked at some screenshots for that-
looked pretty cool, and I'm going to read the reviews- looks like a game my SO would like much more, but I still have my fingers crossed for Sims 2! :)

3. I have BOTH. I have played the original sims with all the add ons for
a few years now, and just LOVE it... What I like is the ability to download gazillions of objects and things to add into the play and scenes. I really love designing the houses.

So, then we bought Sims 2. While we can do more with the people, and building the houses is REALLY spectacular, I miss the 'shopping' and downloading and the extra fun things to add into the mix. I'm not so into the family dramas that seem to be the core of the stories on 2.

They're both fun, and Sims 2 is coming out with "University' which looks like a lot of fun, so just ENJOY.

Either one is simply great, great, good clean fun!

6. I like the idea of drama
I hope it's good!

And I agree- good clean fun! I love to play RPG's and the occasional shoot-em-up game, but prefer strategy games (Like Civilization 3 and Command and Conquer).

The Sims is one of the first non-violent games that I have thoroughly enjoyed in years!

4. They're way different
I have both. Was addicted to Sims 1 for quite a while before buying Sims 2.

The graphics are WAY better...amazingly better. You get to have babies (complete with pregnancy and morning sickness) and it grows up (baby, toddler, child, teen, adult, old person, death). You can create family trees that way as well. There are far more choices for nearly every type of interaction. There are more career options and more levels to move up through in each (and teenagers can get a job). You can have same-sex couples, and they can adopt babies/toddlers/children. I know I'm forgetting things because I haven't played Sims 1 in a while.

As for creating a sim, you have literally thousands of choices. You can shape faces, change hair color/style, makeup, etc. Also, if you're into building houses, Sims 2 is for you...you can add architectural detail!

The only downfall is that there isn't much variety in objects, particularly if you were downloading objects from internet sites. The selection is similar to Sims 1 without the expansion packs. I'm assuming this will change eventually though. However, you can download literally hundreds of different houses from EA's website.

Hope that helps!

5. Yes, it does!
One of the things I didn't particularly like with Sims 1, is the fact that all of your Sims have to be skinny. I'd like more variety in body size & shape.

7. There's really only 2 body shape choices...
skinny and chubby-ish, lol. But the faces...almost limitless alternatives there. ;)

9. Right on,
that's much better than "Skinny and white, skinny and brown, or skinny and black."

8. I have nothing really to contribute here. I just wanted to say that
I gave one of my Sims a combover.

10. Lol.
I like to try to dress my Sims as weird as possible. Fortunately, I finally discovered that I could download skins online to give more variety to the style and appearance of my Sims.

Embarrasingly enough, I had only discovered this a couple weeks ago, reading a thread here about someone's Sim who died while on Free Will.

13. I confess that I have deliberately killed Sims.
One of my Sims was rude to a neighbor - he slapped her without provocation - and so I killed him.

It was cruel, but I will not tolerate the slapping of women.

14. I've only had accidental death so far
Aunt Flo was trying to serve a meal, and the kitchen caught fire. Nobody tried to put it out, they all just stood their pointing and freaking out.
By the time I came back to the computer, and made a Sim run to the phone to call the firemen- Aunt Flo caught on fire. It really sucked, because I had her taking care of all the cleaning and cooking, while the parents went to work everyday.

 What can ya do? :)

15. Have you tried putting a smoke detector over the stove?
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 05:46 PM by elperromagico
I use them in every Sims house. When a fire starts, my Sims sit back and watch TV while the good fireman takes care of the problem.

Burglar alarms are also handy. If a burglar breaks in, the alarm goes off and the cops nab the burglar. Your Sim makes money for catching the burglar... even if he or she is asleep at the time. :D

12. LOL!
That sounds like fun!!

With Sims 1, my SO created a Sim for me, with no points on anything BUT neatness.

Anytime someone would come over, he would ridicule them, seemed to especially enjoy ridiculing the children. We have him living with a woman who is VERY playful. She was supposed to be his wife, but everytime she tries to get close to him, he makes fun of her. They have a child who has 0 neat points, maxed playfulness, and loves to brag and brag and brag.

That's my favorite family :)

17. Sims 2 is a lot of fun, BUT
it requires a pretty robust system to really get the most out of the new graphics and stuff.

18. I checked the requirements,
and I'm pretty sure our PC is capable of handling it, but if it can't, my SO's step-dad is building him a new PC that we plan to use strictly for gaming.

The SO wants to buy Doom 3, and there's NO way our PC can handle it!

19. Well . . . if step-dad builds a system that can handle Doom 3
Sims 2 will work just as well :).

Sims 2 is a resource hog. It also takes great advantage of a good graphics card and lots of RAM. :)

20. Yes, it should work quite nicely!
The way things are headed, though- in 3 or 4 years we will be back to waiting on a new upgrade, lol!

The SO and I aren't very material, but we loves us our PC's and video games!! ;)
