Poll question: Coffee: Occasional joy or every day necessity?
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 09:50 AM by dolo amber
What's up with these "sometimes" coffee drinkers? Weirdos... :wtf:

edit: Grrr...FINE, I fixed it. Now leave me alone until I have my coffee. :P

6. Both!
I work 3rd shift (12 hour shifts no less) and at 4:00am (seems to be my bewitching hour as I'm a natural night person), coffee is the staple of my existence to keep me moving. However, there's something to be said for flavor in a quality coffee as well. :9

I've never gotten the caffeine addiction thing. I enjoy coffee every day, several cups. But on occassions where I can't get coffee or where only decaf is available, I am fine. I can enjoy the taste of decaf just as much.

16. caffeine sensitivity here
Therefore real coffee can only be an occasional treat. My muscles vote that I never drink coffee, but sometimes my mind and my taste buds over-rule. I try to keep it to a dull roar however.

22. never touched it until I met my ex-wife. And now...
I was so worn down mentally & physically from our marriage that it was really affecting my work - I was practically sleeping at my desk. So, I decided to have some coffee to see if that would work - with heavy milk & sugar. That really perked me up and I've been hooked every since.

So, not only did my ex-wife spend money like George W. Bush, she left me with a caffeine addiction.

26. What is it about that guy?
I know next to nothing about electronic music beyond a cursory appreciation of a few selected artists. But everyone i know who is into that scene uses Paul Okenfold as a punch line. What's the back story on this? I wouldn't know a Paul Okenfold song if it came up and clubbed me in the face with a turntable.

30. See the guy in the cross hairs in my sig?
:D

MY personal beef with Oakenfold is that as one of the biggest DJs in the world, he totally squandered the opportunity to turn people in this country onto *proper* dance music...the kind the Europeans do so well. Most if not all of the pioneers of modern house and techno came from America, but finding no audience have since all but given up and now play exclusively overseas. Being a "name", Oakenfold could easily have given exposure to styles that aren't mainstream here, but made them accessible enough for the masses. Instead, he chose to do shitty remixes of shitty pop songs. Therefore, (with exceptions, of course) when people here go to clubs or talk about "dance music", they're mostly talking about the latest Oakenfold remix of the latest Beyonce song or whatever. Just like with most everything else, it's all lowest common denominator rubbish. And then there's that ghastly "Starry-eyed Surprise" pap he made with CrazyTown (who suck mightily in their own right... :puke:)

So, yeah. That's my issue, and I'd imagine I'm not alone in that assessment. But there's enough about Oakenfold to hate that I'm also sure that's not the only thing he's derided for. ;)

32. Interesting.....But what about....
..bigger names that had more "pop" success like The Chemical Brothers or Prodigy or Fatboy Slim. They had much more american success than Okenfold has, didn't they? Or is it not just the popular success thing as much as it is the remixing and such?

Like I said I'm not particularly down with the dj/electronic scene beyond stuff like Underworld, Boards of Canada, DJ Shadow, etc. so I'm not aware of the ins and outs and politics of the scene.

That Starry Eye Surprise song is totally craptastic though. Ugh.

34. Chem. Bros, Prodigy, Fatboy Slim aren't blameless
by any stretch...I do however put them in a different category...I dunno how to explain, and it's in all likelihood just my personal dislike of Oakenfold that makes it so. I guess it's at least partially because those bands were never intended to be anything other than what they are. Oakenfold is SO huge overseas...he was supposed to *bring the music to the masses* as it were. I hope this makes sense...

Big ups for Underworld, btw. They're probably my all time faves. :)

38. O.K. I guess I never knew how big he was/is......
I always forget that type of music is so huge overseas and here it's barely a blip. There are a lot of scenes that are like that. I know of bands that tour the US in a beat up van but go to Japan or Europe and are treated like gods. It's weird.

42. Not for me
I never liked it. A couple times while traveling I found a cup shoved in my hands. Out of politeness, I tossed it down my gullet.

As a teenager, my father said wait until I have to work for a living. Then I'd drink coffee. Twenty-some years later, he asked, "You still don't drink coffee?".

To wake up in the morning, I prefer cold juice or cold water.

50. It's a treat for weekends
The caffeine was creating all sorts of health issues that I realized that I should cut down on it. At my peak usage, I would drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day plus a couple caffeinated sodas. I cut that down to 2 cups of coffee and no sodas, and now I just drink teas (made of twigs and moss ;) ) and save the coffee for weekend brunch. I drink soda only a couple times a month.

Caffeine is a drug and it should be treated as such. Occasional use is great for enhancing your life. But once you start needing it to make it through the day, you need to step back and take a look at why.
