Film Hypocrisy
I’ve found the recent comparison between the passion of the Christ and Million Dollar baby a little mind numbing. It seems as though the Religious Right considers The Passion of the Christ the most important film of the year (Novack called it the best film of the year) and the Right is up in arms because Eastwood injected adrenalin in to Swank’s IV tube in order to put her out of her misery.

Now I’ve seen a lot of films and have no problem with violence on the screen but Passion of the Christ absolutely turned my stomach. Not because Christ was being persecuted but because of the hour and a half blood bath. It was by far the most violent film I have seen to date and I’m amazed it wasn’t rated NC17. Yet the film was almost a required must see by religious groups. Churches were bussing members of their church to theaters to see the film. If it had been anyone other than Christ persecuted in the film I have to believe the right would be screaming bloody murder and protesting outside of theaters. I swear the film makers order blood in 55 gallon barrels for the film.

Yet when Eastwood puts Swank out of her misery as an act of love and compassion, the Right goes nuts. I just don’t get it.

1. How about a "Spoiler Alert", next time?

2. Exactly! I really wanted to see that film, and now the ending is ruined!
If you don't issue a spoiler alert, then at least speak in much more vague terms. Jeesh!

3. hey, he's new, so cut him some slack. Anyway,...
the point is well-taken.
"Baby" does not fit the right's notion of being pro=life, even though Eastwood's character goes to mass again and again and agonizes over his dilemma....(should I have put a spoiler alert on that?)

The hypocritical Michael Medved's comments on this film, even after Eastwood had smoked his critics, or smote them, was sickening.
Make your own film Michael, see if it's one percent of anything Eastwood has ever done.

"Passion" did not get any awards because there is no Oscar for snuff films (i was not the first to say that. in fact i think i read it here.)

7. Sorry if I spoiled the film for anyone.
It's still worth seeing and the most moving and thought provoking film I've seen in years. The part I gave away is a small part of the film and should not effect your viewing pleasure in any way.

Couldn't be better timing for the film to come out as once again Oregon's controversial Right To Die law is under attack from the Federal Government. How many times do we have to tell the Government to stay out of our business?

8. my take on why they love "The Passion"
it's totally self-centered and ego-centric - i.e., "aren't I soooo special as a "saved" Christian because this man endured horrible suffering FOR ME?????" "Look what God did for mememmemememememe, because IIIIIIIII have a PERSONAL relationship with Jesus". It's all about setting themselves above others by highlighting some torture done FOR THEIR SAKE. They eat that stuff up.

Fuck the beatitudes and taking care of the sick, poor, and least among us.

9. for the reverse, mercy killing could be seen as a relief of
suffering (not taking a position one way or the other here, just stating viewpoints), and in the process making a self-sacrifice in actively participating in ending a life, for the benefit of another.

This stance requires great empathy, with no expected benefit to self.

So, there is nothing in it for those of the ego-centric variety.
