A Flame Thread re: The Oscars
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 10:42 PM by UTUSN
The View people were sharply divided. Meredith (quit-my-60-Minutes-to-breast-feed/not-really) and Joy (quit-my-receptionist-job-to-be-a comedian-not-really) were negative towards the minorities-------why should Beyonce sing THREE songs, and why should Jamie refer to his momma's BEATING him.

My beef was OTHER. Apparently the overall PREMISE of the production of the program was that the original singers of the songs IN THE MOVIES would not be allowed to perform, that they would be REPLACED by cash-NAMES. So, when the South American dude who wrote the nominated song for "Motorcycle Diaries" was not allowed to sing, and was REPLACED by Carlos SANTANA and Antonio BANDERAS----------he WON and his acceptance "speech" consisted of SINGING his own, winning song for the time allotted. That was SO cool.

Another something that pissed me off: If Sean COMBES and Prince and Dustin HOFFMAN were too GD BORED to be there, WHY DID THEY BOTHER TO BE THERE?

Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 10:44 PM by zidzi
the Carlos Santana/Antonio Banderas duo..but they were excellente and so was the dude who wrote it and accepted..the camera panned on Antonio when the acceptance was going on and he was loving it.

Beyonce did a good job..especially the French song..but it would have been nice to split it up a bit..and afterall her singing of three songs..not one of them won.

And Jamie told it like it was with his Grandma..whatever she did to him..he loves the heck outta her! Too bad he wasn't P.C...I can't stand those cackling hens on the view.

4. Ha-ha "those cackling hens on The View"
However, the white chicks ganged up on Star-REYONLDS. She was beleagured. But I think they had a point.

My deal is: The people who produce these extraganzas are SO RICH and SO experienced,==========why can't they use some COMMON SENSE-----plain old show-biz, what=people-LIKE. It's like, you and I knew there was no reason for the Iraq attack, how come all these high flown D.C. people claim to have been DECEIVED. We don't even have ACCESS to "intelligence" and WE KNEW! Same thing.

6. I'm curious now..what "point" did the
white chicks have? And, did they put Star in a position that she had to defend her Black brethren?

I know I would have been on Star's side..cause she's the only one I can handle of the five.

8. Well, I Can't Speak for the White Chicks
but whatever they said, that was their point. And, yes, Mrs REYNOLDS *did* have to defend her Black brethren, which she did. However, I myself did NOT like it that the show's producers decided that only cash-stars would cover the songs. The original artists were masking-taped.

12. I understand..and agree.
Point well taken.

Too bad they got the highest rating in "5 years"..they're not likely to try and do better.

I remember when randy newman finally won and I thought the song sucked and I wanted the song from Moulin Rouge to win..I loved that song!

2. Why SHOULD Beyonce sing three songs?
Granted, she's gorgeous, but her voice ain't all that (hell, I would rather she have performed that Crazy in Love song, or whatever the title...). I haven't seen the movie, but why didn't the actress who played "Christine" in Phantom of the Opera sing? Or the guy from The Motorcycle Diaries? Bizarre. Oscars music is usually pretty lame, but the least they could do is let the original musicians perform. (And Antonio, please wash the hair - you were hotter as Puss N Boots!)

5. I know what you mean about Antonio's
hair..with all that money..you'd think he could find some way to have his hair shining and healthy looking instead of oily and matted!

And when he walked into the Oscars..it was a little pony tail.

likes the collegen look and she can afford it.

I like both of them..I don't mind stating my opinion on how someone looks, though.

17. and we thought she lip synched two of them
there are so many talented people...it really makes me suspicious of why Beyonce sang three.

We call it "JUICE" in Vegas.

19. I tuned her out after 1.5 songs...
but I think you're right (I'd be hard-pressed to sit through any Webber music...). At least Adam Duritz didn't lip synch, but I was more focused on his Sideshow Bob hair than his singing!

7. What's wrong with the Oscars is what's
wrong with America. People are so motivated by greed that they're losing their individuality in order to keep as large a buying public as possible. Maybe whoever produces Beyonce's records has an affiliation with the network. I'm sure there's a money connection. What else explains her singing three of the four songs? It just doesn't make sense.
At least Chris Rock didn't ignore our current discomfort with our administration. I wish a few others had shown a little more fortitude. I know. I know. Many say it isn't the time or the place. But, hey, this is a chance to reach millions. Why muzzle Robin Williams? Let him made a fool of himself, or not. But let him speak. This generic, we all look good because an entire team assured we would and we're not going to ruin it by actually expressing ourselves philosophy has neutered the Oscars. They're bland and devoid of emotion. Even the acceptance speeches are vetted for effectiveness and acceptance.
I miss Cher. I miss Marlon Brando's stand-in Indian princess. I miss Michael Moore. I even miss Kim Basinger's grumbling, rightfully so, that Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" was robbed. And I really miss Bette Midler's crassly stating what most people are thinking. Pair Chris with Bette next year. Let's resuscitate this dying Oscar.

18. Who among you has participated significantly in a movie?
To the extent that you have been recognized and appreciated by your peers?

I read a lot of sour grapes in this thread.
