WTF? Remember that temp job I've talked about? (THIS IS GOOD!)
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 07:23 PM by Faye
If so, remember the older lady that worked there that they were waiting for her to retire? Well, she retires in 3 weeks. Another co-worker just told me today, hinting for me tell them that i want the position. Also, the managers of that dept. started giving me back the work that i used to do for them today (which the old lady has been doing).

There is a problem though. It seems that another dept. has been 'creating' a different position for me, what i have been doing since i've been back the past few weeks (making phone calls to vendors, working for purchasing and inventory).....it's ok, but i would MUCH rather take the other position, since i am already half way trained from the last time i was there!!!

i'm so confused!!!! i hate to be picky, but i want this lady's job, and i have waited MONTHS for this to happen!! how do i tell them that i would rather have her job? i already know how to do half of it, and they know i am good. but i hate to diss the other department :( To be honest, i think i could handle both. Both positions combined is NOT that much - it would just keep me busy all day, which is what i want.

what should i do? :(

1. It sounds like you have an opportunity to save a lot of money.
Ask for time & 3/4 of what the two jobs would cost with two people. That way you make more and the company saves 25%.

2. Well,
i'm definately going to offer to take on both jobs for them. really, the job i want (that i've been waiting to become open) has kind of 'lull' periods - and it's all mostly just data entry, updating documents, etc. - so that part is easy. i'm sure i can work in some time to make calls to vendors to check on orders. i know i can do it.

you are right, it would save them money. actually, i already CAN save them money b/c i know how to work in like 3 different departments, so i can cover for people, etc.

man.....i can't believe this is real....i have been waiting months to go back to this company and do this for them. :wtf:

3. First accept the position you want,
after your probation period offer your suggestions. Just get the job you want first, go for the jugular next.

The other thing is, if you can prove $$$'s saved from you doing both jobs and that you are capable I would talk to someone higher up. Yes, $$$'s saved opens the eyes of those above.

4. Forgot to mention
you must have proof that doing the two jobs in profitable for the company, have it in writing.

6. I remember you talking about the temp job.
So my questions are...

1) Does either job pay benefits? If so, offer to do both if you honestly think you can and it would make you happy. They might love the chance not to have to pay benefits twice (or the temp agency's overhead for another temp trainee). Tell them you'd like to try it on a six month basis, so if doing 2 jobs actually sucks, you have a graceful out. Probably make them more keen to go if they think they have an "out," too, other than firing you. After 6 months, if everyone is happy, stay. After 6 months, if one or the other of you don't like the way it's working out, renegotiate. (Although if thy think you can't handle both jobs, you have to quietly accept whichever one they put you in, probably.) If neither job offers benefits, take one and keep looking for something real.

2) Have they actually offered you the job? Doesn't sound like it. And so my advice to you is to be cool until the option is actually presented to you. I can't tell you how many hints were dropped to me when I perma-temped only to be thwarted by the transfer of some person internally, or from another facility out of state, or a friend of a friend's daughter was starving and needed a job.

I'm not generally this cynical, but temping is a freaky business. I wish you well, however. Only two places ever bought my contract in all the time I temped. I refused one because it was so dysfunctional, and the other place--which I loved--went bankrupt after a year.

11. both positions have benefits.
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 07:46 PM by Faye
any full time job there with them has benefits, very good ones from what i hear, which is why they really are picky about hiring people permanently.

i actually DO know they want me full time, but i don't know how they are going to work this out. i'm not keeping my mouth shut. i am saying something tomorrow and being upfront. i am not missing this opportunity!!!!

13. Well, you know best!
After all, I don't know where you work, and I think you should always go wth your gut about jobs.

I'll hope you get it, and that it falls into the "favorite job" category, and not the "dysfunctional company" category. :hi:

7. Oh NO NO NO... Do not offer to take both!
Not until after you have spent time in one. You may completely understand the workload, but things have a habit of piling up. Later, after you know the ropes completely, you could take portions of work in other areas. Do NOT do that up front... ESPECIALLY since it is clear already that you are wanted fulltime for both positions.

Don't give stuff away... sounds like you're already a shoe-in... AND... you should take the position you want, not the other one.

not with this company. you have to be a 'go-getter', as my one good friend there has taught me. :)

i'm just trying to gather the courage to be a 'go-getter'.
