My mother picked up the money for my consignment clothing.

I needed that money. I was counting on it. I only have about $20 left in the bank.

It's been nice not having to think about her, but when this came up it was like someone dropped a hot rock in my chest. Damn. It's so obvious that her "love" was conditional.

I hope it doesn't take too long to get over this. :(

1. Picked it up? And spent it herself, you mean?

2. Looks that way, unfortunately. :(
I can see some reasons she might have picked it up, but it was agreed I could have the money. I was counting on that $50 to see me through this month. I made a financial decision today based on picking up the money. I have $20 and no decent food in the house. I've been eating lots of peanut butter sandwiches this month.

3. So let me ask
You left your clothing at a consignment shop so they could sell it for you? Said shop sold the clothing? Then they gave the money due you to someone else? Where do they get off doing that?

6. At the time I was still on good terms with my mother...
...so I told them it was OK. It's a bit more complicated than that, but explaining things would take a novel. :D She had legal access to the money.

7. You're right
Things like this are often more complex than they look at first. Trust me, I've been there, too. "Mommie Dearest" tried in vain to steal an inheritance from me. Small (very small) though it was, it represented a relationship that I treasured. Keep up your spirit.

4. I'm so sorry, Ladyhawk
I know how it feels to have to plan so scrupulously about every penny - to be essentially robbed of it by your mother is pretty harsh. I will not say something empty like "hang in there" - it's all one can do. What other choices are there?

5. I'll be okay.

A case could be made that I owed her the money, I suppose. But she originally said I could have the money at the consignment store. In the past she used money to "carrot-and-stick" me into proper behavior. This is probably more of the same.

It could be a simple misunderstanding, but since I am not on speaking terms with family anymore, I can't work it out. I can't allow myself to come into contact with more toxicity. I've been so much better off since I told my family goodbye.

Maybe this is a way to try to get to me? If so, I'll do without the money and eat peanut butter sandwiches for the rest of my life. :)
