1. I haven't and won't see it...and I have a rant about it anyway!
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 04:00 AM by fleabert
Why is it that when boys take care of children, it's funny, silly, and strange, and movie-worthy? I mean, a man? changing a diaper? HILARIOUS!!! How will he handle it? Will it be stinky and he'll freak out? I can't wait! Oh my god! He has to get them ready for school and take them...I bet something crazy happens!

Men should be offended that they are portrayed as such complete idiots, and women should be offended that the same movie with a woman in the main role would never make it past the pitch.

Perhaps I should have started my own rant thread...sorry. I get pissed every time I am reminded of this movie. BUT...Vin Diesel is hot.

2. Rant away
I'm not sure i'll see it, i just wanted some opinions. I really can't answer your questions. For me it's not about watching men in general, it's about watching tough guy, hot man Vin Diesel.

3. he is tasty. I just think IRL, he could certainly handle a few kids.
As could most adults and preteens. I was taking care of multiple kids in middle school!!! and I am not the sharpest tack in the box, I managed quite well at 11, I think a full grown man would do just fine without freaking out over a few diapers.

If I could mute the whole thing, and blur out everything except him, I would go see it. Too bad he took a role that is so beneath him and just about every other man on the planet.

4. What about Raising Helen?
The Parent Trap movies. Baby Boom. There's movies about women who aren't familiar with babies. What about Rachel on Friends. I wonder what kind of stereotyping it is that forgets the stories about women having mothering trials.

5. Uptown Girls too.

But ones with guys are more prevalent (and the "comic situations" are way more rediculous). Pacifer is like the 100th retread of Mr Mom.

8. While I agree with you...
While i agree with you that men are continually portrayed as incompetent when it comes to caring for children, I think the point of the movie is that Diesel is supposed to be a tough guy / Navy Seal who finds that taking care of children is tougher than fighting terrorists - or at least a completely different challenge than one he has prepared his whole adult life for.

(And, I know plenty of men that are as good as or better with their children than their wives...)

Fish out of Water movies are a dime a dozen throughout Hollywood history - Crocodile Dundee, Tarzan, Beverly Hills Cop, Kindegarten Cop, etc. They never get tired of putting a new wrinkle on the same story.

9. Socially learned rolls
At its foundation our society percieves women as nurturers and men as aggressors. When people function within their socially percieved rolls there is little to no reaction. But when people step outside their rolls cognitive diconnects occur.

This in part explains why women being passionate towards one another is more tolerated than men expressing passion. Women are expected to be passionate. Its natural for them to show affection. But men are cast as the aggressors and defenders. Passion between them doesn't fit our expectations.

Thus in a comedy of this type they take an exaggerated example of aggressive male and place them in a roll where nuturing is necissary. The disconnect creates the edge necissary for comedy. Comedy is often the distress of others. This comedy is derived from the perception of an aggressor placed in an environment where his identity cannot function. A typical Fish out of Water comedy.

6. I haven't even heard of the movie.
When did it come out? I love Vin Diesel. He is not the greatest actor, but he doesn't have to be with his sex appeal. I will definitely see the movie, but I'll wait until it comes out on DVD.
