How did you chose your on-line name?
I belong to several different on-line chat sites and on a couple of those groups someone has always asked the question:

How did you chose your on-line screen name?

Since joining here I've often wondered how each of you chose your name. So I thought I would ask. I find it interesting hearing the story behind the name.

I chose my name several years ago when the show Babylon 5 was popular. I joined a group that chatted about the show and I wanted a name that could be connected to one of my favorite characters, "Delenn"

Unfortunately this group already had a couple Delenn's with a number attached and I wanted to be different. So as she was a member of the Grey Council I decide to use Grey and add the Lyn part on...making "Greylyn"

Long explanation I know, but there you have it. So how did you decide on a name? I think this will make an interesting thread.

So step up and introduce yourself. :hi:

20. Reminds Me of a Joke, Mark
Seems a fellow named Mark decided to take a short cut through a cemetery one night. When he was near the middle of the cemetery he heard a voice cry out, 'Mark!' He looked around, didn't see anyone, and continued walking. Once again he heard, 'Mark!', but couldn't see anyone. He quickened his pace and suddenly heard, 'Mark!', then began running in earnest. The voice called out repeatedly, 'Mark! Mark!' as he reached the stone wall surrounding the cemetery. He jumped up, got his arms on the top of the wall, and pulled himself all the way. He took one last look back...and that's when he saw...

I decided that I was going to stop debating political theory on usenet and start focusing all my online posting to confront the massive brainwashing of the american population. Thus the name. Since the second selection I've more or less abandoned usenet, but kept the moniker.

creativity. You can see it reflected in my clever screen name, "tblue37."

I devised it (are you taking notes?) by combining my first initial with my last name. Then, as an added little touch of beauty, I attached a number--not just any number, mind you, but one that I rather like the sound of.

Voila!

(Thank you, thank you! Shhhhhh--please, stop applauding. You're embarrassing me!)

16. I chose it in a non-thinking moment!
I was brand new to the internet Ñ and suddenly was on a site that required registrations.

"Yikes! They want me to choose a name?" I was somehow so very nervous about typing in some kind of identification, that I just plain froze. But, glancing out the window, I saw my CAR in the driveway and thought "I'll just use that!".

I have a 1995 Mercury TRACER station wagon.

(Pretty good car, too, I must say).

but lurked for the first several months.

I had saved my login info on my PC, so I never had to login and as I said I never posted.

Then, about the time I decided I just had to start posting, I got a new laptop and the auto login stuff didn't happen. I couldn't even remember my handle! What a moran! I thnk it had something to do with my actual name, but what I thought it was didn't work.

So I had to make up a new login on the spot and I happened to be listening to The Replacements "Tim" CD at the time. "Left of the Dial" is a song on that record. Presto!

which started as a joke between my husband and me (with Judy Tenuta-ish lines like "I'm a Sparkly Fairy Princess, damnit" as well as "I'm a delicate frickin' flower" and "I'm a precious goddamn jewel if you don't mind" spoken with a certain New York accent). It kind of has to do with being a dancer and always trying to grow a spine -- I'm terribly unassertive in real life.

So on Bartcop I was already "SparklyFairyPrincess" and I just thought I'd shorten it here.

"Igil" is German. /ig-/ is apparently cognate with the <edge> in 'hedgehog' (the /h/ a folk etymology--they're frequently in hedges--and the -hog is a folk etymology for the ending -oc in Old English).

They solve tensions and conflict through sexual behavior, unlike their cousines the better-known Chimpanzee (and humans) who solve it through mostly fighting.

Their tribes are led by a strong matriarch and I wish humans were more like them.

56. Childhood nickname
I was pretty fat when I was a kid. I was the only black kid in my town, so people though that I looked like Rerun from the show What's Happening. They called me Rerun, and the name stuck long after lost weight. The character Rerun's proper name was Freddie Stubbs.

71. Tribute to my bestest buddy
As is my avatar. He just recently turned 83 years young. Flash Gordon represents a turning point in his life. The avatar is from his sketchbook when he was 14 years old trying to get in this new school in NYC called the High School of Music and Arts.

A real Democrat. Politically savvy. My bestest buddy.

72. Mythological reference
My user-name is the shield of Zeus, but it more often associated with Athena, of whom I am very fond. The Aegis also reflects back negative attacks.

73. Simple...
An onager is a wild ass, or donkey, as in "Democrat."

The onager was also a catapult used by the Roman army. (It earned the name because when it was fired the back end kicked up into the air, like a donkey's hind legs.)

They were used to throw rocks and fireballs at the enemy, and I like to think of myself doing the same thing to Repubs and Fundie asshats.

78. My logon name...
I happen to be a fan of Stanislaw Lem, a polish sci-fi writer.

He has a book called 'The Cyberiad' which I thought was funny as hell. The name is the name of one of the main characters in the book. The two main characters are trying to outdo each other, and generally getting into trouble doing it.

I used to use 'Sir Osis of Liver', didn't realize that it was from a Bugs Bunny cartoon ( round table knight ), until somebody pointed it out to me.

I occasionally use Propellerhead... I'm a nerd, should be wearing a propeller beanie, also I used to be a mechanic on a sub, and the rate device is a propeller.

K.

86. Even tho I was born in Texas
and left for good when I was 18 and went east to college, I now consider myself a Connecticut Yankee. Texans get all bent out of shape when one of their own (2nd generation at that)up and leave Texas. It gives me great pleasure to be emigre from that awful place. Oh, and I love to remind Texans that * was born in the city I call home, New Haven. They all think he was born in TX. Big lie (but what else is new).

89. Character from a novel by Robert Heinlein
The embedded "Diaries of Lazarus Long" from Time Enough for Love are the closest thing I have to a bible.

I use this name everywhere. It has become my alter ego. Fitting, as the character is a twin.

90. Joined DU after the election
when anyone who didn't believe that Chimpy had won was accused of being a nut or a conspiracy theorist. And since formal wear for conspiracy nuts is tin foil, I decided that tin foil should be "in" this year. Besides, it is much more fashionable than the frumpy outfits Pickles runs around in.
