Tips for my cover letter to Obama?
I'm applying to work in his Chicago office this summer. What are they looking for in an intern at one of these constituent offices? I was a Kerry intern, and I have had several administrative/office jobs. I just want to make sure that i stand out! (I have decided to not send a stack of newspaper clippings of me and the Edwards shirts, a little too over the top)

1. They are looking for someone who will work for free

Most political internships are unpaid, unless its through some kind of school-sponsored program, so I'm assuming you aren't looking for pay. They usually don't have an easy time of finding good students who will work for free on their schedule. Mostly, I would try to show that you are reasonably intelligent, aren't above doing some grunt work, are easy to work with, and that you aren't a screw up. Most of the work they do in those offices in constituent casework, so if you've done anything remotely related to casework or other work with the public, that may help. I did an internship in Durbin's office years ago while I was still in college and it was a lot of fun. Good luck. I'm sure you'll do fine.

I saw the photos you're talking about on your website. While they would definitely inspire me to hire you for a job I think you're right that it wouldn't be very professional. :)

2. don't be afraid to toot your own horn
talk about everything political you've done. Talk about your passion for politics and wanting to do good in the world. You should also mention your website. As an intern for a state senator, i did a TON of work on computers, so i'm sure a US senator would be seriously looking for someone with a lot of computing experience. good luck with it!

3. Oh yeah, one more thing
I forgot to make cover letter suggestions. I've gotten a lot of compliments on my cover letters for political jobs so I'll suggest a basic format.

First, state why you want the internship. This is the place to state your love for Obama and how you want to make a difference in the world etc.

Second, list the two or three things about you that make you right for the job. This is where you highlight the best parts of your resume for people who don't have time to read a stack of resumes in detail. Mention your Kerry internship and anything remotely related to constituent casework that you may have done, or maybe an academic achievement. Don't try to redescribe your entire resume. Just pick out the best parts you want to bring attention to.

Finally, restate your enthusiasm about the position and that you are well qualified for it.

Make sure your grammar and spelling are correct and you should be fine. Make it succinct and to the point. People don't want to spend all day reading cover letters.
I hope this helps.

4. thanks guys!
I am definitely willing to work for free, because it's half the summer and I will be making money the first half. I'll be staying at home, so meh.

I'll keep these tips in mind!
