'Eternal Sunshine,' 'Sideways' win at Writers Guild Awards

Tale of two people who try to erase their memories of one another turned out to be an unforgettable story for writers group.
By The Associated Press

The tale of two people who try to erase their memories of one another turned out to be an unforgettable story for the Writers Guild of America, which honored "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" with its best original screenplay award Saturday night.

The screenplay was written by Charlie Kaufman from a story by Kaufman, Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth. The film starred Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as the couple who try to forget each other when their relationship sours.

The best adapted screenplay award went to "Sideways," the story of two buddies on an odyssey through Southern California wine country. The film's screenplay was adapted by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor from Rex Pickett's novel.

The television award for episodic drama went to Debora Cahn for "The Supremes" episode of NBC's "The West Wing."

There were two winners for episodic comedy, Jim Vallely and Mitchell Hurwitz for the "Pier Pressure" episode of Fox's "Arrested Development" and Neil Thompson for the "Ida's Boyfriend" episode of Fox's "Malcolm in the Middle."

Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" won the long-form adapted writing award for television for Kushner's HBO teleplay, which was based on his play.

The long-form original writing award went to Peter Silverman and Robert Caswell for HBO's "Something the Lord Made."

1. Good choice.
Charlie Kaufman is one of my favorites. Imaginative and thinks outside the box.

2. Kaufman definitely deserved it
The Sideways screenplay was pretty good. Hard to argue with those choices.
