Poll question: Which Country Would Stand The Best Chance In A War vs. The U.S. ?
If, for some reason, Bush manages to piss off enough countries that we have a WWF-style Royal Rumble of nations, which one's do you think would stand the best chance in a direct head-to-head fight with the United States?

2. I don't think any one country could win a war with us,
but the Saudi's could probably cripple us.

8. Saudis cripple us? Nah. We'd just storm in and take over the place
And don't think we won't do that before too long. (if the bfee remains in power--or PNAC, which probably covers both parties)

5. There are no head to head wars
anymore.

Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Iraq...you may have noticed the trend.

Levels the playing field doesn't it.

9. Question:
How and where is this war going to be fought? On US Soil? An over-the-sea invasion of the US would be obliterated before it could pose a threat. Even if they do make it across the pond, they would have to face Ted Nugent and the like.

14. Exactly
It would depend on where the war was fought. Any nation that faces the United States on a third territory would be defeated, just because of the strength of our conventional forces (the reach that our navy and airforce have because of our technological superiority). If we tried to invade China or Russia we would get our asses handed to us (just like Germany and Japan in WWII). Nationalism and the shear size of Russia's and China's territory and population would make the war a meatgrinder for us. Just look at how much trouble Iraq's twenty million are giving us, and that war has just begun.

No one would win a nuclear war.

10. China has an infinite amount of people...
And we'd run out of people way before they did...unless we dropped some nice little bombs on them to take out most of their stash of humans.

11. First off, no one wins a nuclear war.
Secondly, China would BEAT us in a non-nuclear war.
Therefore, we could never "win" a war against China.

15. The U.S. could beat China
if the war was offshore (e.g., Taiwan). Our navy and airpower is too much for them. This is what has kept them out of the Republic of China for the last fifty years.

A war in mainland China is a whole other kettle of fish.

20. Alot of countries could "beat" the US
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 11:38 PM by Cat Atomic
... in certain circumstances. Even Iraq, a country with the worst military in the region, is able to put up enough resistance that the war may become too unpopular back home to be sustained. And that's IRAQ.

North Korea could easily do the same if the US tried to invade it. China and Russia...? It's not even a question. They could make a war so incredibly costly for the US that it could never maintain popular support at home, and that's really the hurdle to be overcome these days.

I think that the US military is largely a paper tiger. Don't get me wrong- it's the best on the planet. It's the most technically impressive military force in history. But there are always limits to military might. Look at the Mongols in China. They were absolutely unstoppable, and they took China easily. Fifty years later... they were speaking Chinese.

21. China, and not just on Chinese soil
I feel China would grind us to dust if the war was to take place anyplace in southeast Asia. Even an offshore fight in Taiwan. Anyplace that would require any serious heavy lift capability and their ability to fight quickly becomes moot. China has NO heavy lift capability, or even the ability to carry their forces across water. But I think Taiwan is close enough to where they could throw enough meat at our fleets to negate them after a period of time.....the fleets would run out of munitions at some point. In a third party place, we beat anyone, and damn near any coalition simply because of our heavy lift capability. Projection of power has been our focus for half a century, everybody else save for the now non existant Soviet Union has been focused on defense.

In a fictitious Royal Rumble style fight where all go into one place and duke it out till one is left standing, I see a three way standstill. US, Russia, and China barely standing at the end, with no ability to fight on. We are not light years beyond the other 2 superpowers as many would like to believe.

Yes, Russia and China are superpowers, even if the 2 countries don't know it, heh.
