I need some advice. Should I reply to this idiot, hit alert or just ignore
him? I admit that I never should have posted in this board. It's imdb, the Internet Movie Database. The only reason I ever registered with them was because I wanted to give "Fahrenheit 9/11" a very high rating, after I saw it. I should have left it at that. *sigh*

I seem to have very poor luck on other forums, and should just stick with DU. I belonged to FR for more than two years, with no problems, but, finally, just gave up after the Swiftboat controversy, though everyone backed down from me, but one lone guy. I saw "Sideways," the other night, and just cannot support driving drunk. Sorry. Am I nuts?:-(

Should I respond? Or just back off? How does condemnation of drunk driving make me "right wing?" I guess this accusation is that's what's bothering me. You can certainly understand. Dennis Kucinich was my first-choice candidate, hardly right wing.

I'm trying to decide how to reply to this ass on imdb, or just hit "alert." Apparently, I am "right wing," because I think that driving drunk is a bad choice.

I agree and I did think about this, myself. Penalties are severe in the U.S., if you're caught driving under the influence. And there is a huge PR campaign to eliminate this, choosing a "designated driver" who agrees not to drink. Yes, this is only a movie, but it does send the wrong message. Drunk driving is a major problem in the U.S. and every effort is being made to discourage it. It was my understanding that, at wine tastings, people would taste and spit. But this was not the case here.

Its not sending a message at all, genius! Its a story, a realistic story about realistic people doing realistic things. People drive drunk all the time, its right-wing censorship addicts like yourself that keep reality from the eyes of the people. This sort of thing causes more harm than a drunk driver.

1. Hit 'alert'
Drunk driving is bad news no matter what wing you are.

So is the stupidity of that poster.

3. Thank you, and I will. I guess I just needed a little support
And, as a liberal, I really resented being accused of being "right wing." Where does this idiot get this, anyway? I condemn drunk driving. I don't think that this opinion has a political bias. It's just dangerous. Thanks.:-)

But I am a liberal, and I am trying, to promote liberal candidates, as much as I can. But I truly thank you for your support.:grouphug:

4. Somehow, I can't see Dennis Kucinich advocating drunk driving.

Somehow, I can't see any rational person advocating it. But it's kind of funny that he accuses you of being right wing since it's the left that's always accused of wanting a "nanny state" when we suggest it should be the law that people have to wear seat belts in cars, helmets on motorcycles, etc. "Let people be free to drive drunk" is a right wing sentiment, in my view.

Hit alert and maybe they'll zap him. Or just tell him he's a fool and move on. I don't know the best course but any Kucinich voter deserves a reply. :7 :hi:

16. I can't see Dennis advocating drunk driving, either
I can't see any rational person advocating it. That's just nuts.

And, I agree, it is a RW sentiment. But I did review this thread, and the person who started it is British, and was shocked that so many of the characters in this film were driving drunk, with no repercussions. Apparently, laws regarding this are much stricter in the UK than they are here. But just look at the personal history of George Bush*.:grr:

I did hit "alert" and have no intention of returning there. I belonged to FR for almost two years and have yet to even get a post zapped in the I/P forum, here on DU, where feelings run pretty high, but I got myself into trouble on a message board discussing movies! Go figure!

Thanks for your reply. I voted for John Kerry, but my heart belongs to Dennis.:-)

5. I did hit "alert" and here's what I said:
This person called me names, not acceptable, and accused me of a political bias, which, obviously, was not true. I am not espousing right-wing causes, just condemning drunk driving. He attacked the messenger, and not the message, forbidden on any message board. I am not promoting censorship, since I am a liberal, but just believe that driving drunk is not an intelligent choice, and very dangerous.

17. Thank you. I appreciate the support.
I was totally baffled by this very bizarre attack. Who advocates drunk driving, anyway? And why does my opposing it make me a Freeper?

And I just checked. This post is still up. I hit alert, so that's all that I can do. Something tells me that this message board is not as heavily monitored as ours is. But, you'd think discussing movies wouldn't lead to as many controversies as politics. Guess again.

7. you did the right thing
you may have touched on a nerve with this guy. I feel the same way about drunk driving as you do and I am really out there in left field.Driving is one of the strangest things we do and people take it for granted, make a few calls, play with the stereo, eat a meal and jeez I am such a good driver I can do it drunk and blindfolded.
All it takes is that one time, then people get the message.

18. Thank you. I was just totally baffled to have been attacked for
Being against drunk driving. Who in the world would advocate it?

I checked the original post, and it was made by someone from Britain, who was shocked that so many people in this movie were driving drunk, since laws in England, regarding this, are much stricter than they are here. I see her point, but I still don't see how this makes me right wing!

Maybe I did hit a nerve with this guy, but I was surprised at the personal attack. I read over more of the messages on this board, and there seem to be quite a few of them, so I guess it is allowed.

And I also agree about driving. In NY State, talking on the phone, while driving, is against the law, but I see people doing it, everyday. Scares me to death. Not to mention the guy I saw on the Mass Pike, reading a book, while driving! I kid you not! And you're right, it only takes that one time.
:scared:

26. It looked to me
like this rude person was doing the mane-calling over your objections to drunk-driving being depicted in the movie, not your disapproval of actual drunk driving. At least that was the way I read it. This guy sounds somewhat edgy about censorship, but that's not an excuse for him being so rude.

driving and there is no place for it on the roads and on the rest of the trails and waters , but what worrys me the most is the so called sober ones who are in such a hurry , it is a bad place to be on the roads anymore , like in crazy , people ahve lost all sences when they get behind the wheels ,

22. I agree. People are in too much of a hurry and place us all in danger.
I sometimes drive too slow, and people get pissed off and honk and pass me. I am just careful. I can't see well, at night, so drive slower, if I can't see. I don't take chances. And it's not just on the roads, but trails and waters, as you say. I live near Lake George, NY, and there are problems with people boating while drunk. I just don't get it. How can they not see that this is dangerous?

10. I agree with you 100% about drunk driving.
I have had two family members killed by drunk drivers. My step-father was killed by an off-duty drunken policeman. And my son-in-law was mowed down by a drink driver as he was walking down the street.

23. Thank you. Wow! I am so very sorry! This is a real tragedy.
You should be the one addressing the guy who advocates drunk driving, and not me, but I am certainly willing to do it on your behalf. My 16-year-old cousin was killed in an auto accident, in which his teen-age friend was driving drunk. His family has not been the same, since. Perhaps I should bring this up, but I don't think that this guy is receptive to much, if he is so clueless. Again, you have my sympathy. This is more than anyone should have to go through.;(

"This sort of thing causes more harm than a drunk driver."

Obviously, this person needs to attend a victim's impact panel. What a nitwitted thing to say on his part.

As far as answering him, I'd post links to MADD, etc...:hi:

On edit: I love IMDB (I subscribe to IMDB Pro) - didn't know there was a forum there, though...

24. Well, apparently, there is, and I made the mistake of posting there,
Idiot that I am. And your point is well taken. He, obviously, has never been affected by the tragedy that a drunk driver can cause.:-(

I'm just going to leave it alone, since my alert did no good. These people seem to be a law unto themselves, which would make sense, since they're only discussing movies, but it doesn't seem to work out that way.

I just used this site to look up info on movies. I should have just have left it at that. And, yes, there is a forum. But it, obviously, is not monitored.

12. I'm called a rabid liberal
and I won't ride with anyone who's been drinking...even if it's just one. Even if it's my husband. And our biggest fights have been about him having a beer and driving.

I know my attitude is harsher than most people's but drunk drivers are second on my list of people to get rid of.

But I hate backing down from a troll challenge.

But that's just me.

What you should do is go ahead and ignore his stupid ass, and hope that he finds Jeebus someday at the base of a telephone pole.

Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 08:54 AM by radwriter0555
that right there is your clue.

Only a real loser would identify with any character in that story about losers, by losers and for losers.

And to say the characters are realistic while pretending their actions and drunk driving aren't, is just ridiculous.

LUCKILY the auther is such a twit; someone else will point it out.

19. I am against drunk driving BUT
I think it is a major distraction from the overall picture of safe driving.

One of my closest friends was driving his daughter one day when a guy going 70mph ran a red light on a city street.
My friend's daughter was killed and my friend spent more than a month in ICU.

The guy that hit my friend was given two tickets: running a red and speeding. He was sober. He was late for work.

If he had been DRUNK his ass would still be in jail for killing that little girl. But since he was SOBER, he got two tickets.
:wtf:

I am AGAINST the obsession with drunk driving. Why should a drunk driver have to spend time in jail, when a sober person can kill and get away with it?

I think "reckless driving" should include driving under the influence as well as running reds, etc. It's just not fair to discriminate.
