I like "Rodan" best myself ... but the original "Godzilla" (in Japanese, w/o Raymond Burr) is pretty good, too.

5. I LOVE Rodan
I hope someone releases it with the original Japanese language track here in the US. The relentless dubbing (voiced by Keye Luke) is really rough on the ears after a while.

Minute for minute the battle of Sassebo is the best monster sequence Toho ever did.

I didn't think that abomination was a part of Godzilla canon, but merely a misguided attempt by Hollywood to remake it, American-style.

23. well, Sony Pictures/Centropolis had Toho's blessing
in preproduction. They licenced the character and images from Toho. Godzilla vs Destroyah was supposed to be the end of the Japanese Godzilla films, at least for a decade or so, but Devlin/Emmerich's Godzilla was so awful they had to answer for it and did with Godzilla 2000 Millennium and the films that followed.

Zilla, as the American Godzilla is know, appears in Sydney Australia in Godzilla Final Wars and is killed by the real Godzilla. Sounds cooler than it is as Godzilla apparently dispatches 20 some odd monsters in this film.

44. apparently all the monsters fights last less than a couple of minutes
so Ryuhai Kitamura can concentrate the story on a crappy Matrix ripoff... Zilla dies as fast as Mothra, Rodan, Gigan, Ebirah, Hedora... So it's not as cool as it could have been.

15. do you mean the origin of the name "Gojira"
or of the concept for the film? The hell with it, I'll answer both...

The name - rumored to be the nickname of a studio worker, a contraction of the words for Gorilla and Whale. It's also been said that Honda wanted to make the Japanese King Kong, which didn't appear in Japan until after 1945 and was an enormous hit (no pun intended). When financing fell through for a war epic Toho allowed him to make his monster picture.

The film- some of it is in the above paragraph. When the crew of the Lucky Dragon was poisoned following the detonation of the H- Bomb at Bikini Atol, and made news all over Japan, Honda conceive the idea of a radioactive monster, a physical representation of the destruction that atomic weapons offered to humanity. In fact, a version of the Lucky Dragon incident opens the film, only it's Godzilla not the H Bomb that poisons the crew.

where Hesei Godzilla would fight a ghost of 1954 Godzilla... but it was scrapped... In fact there were several possibilities for the film that would be Godzilla vs. Destroyah including another Kong, Mecha Kong, and yet another outing for King Ghidorah.

66. bzzt AND bzzt.
(sorry it took me so long to reply. Mac problems)

Some history: On March 1, 1954, the hydrogen bomb was tested at Bikini atoll in the South Pacific. Unfortunately, the Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryo Maru ("Lucky Dragon"), was too close to the testing site. All members of the crew ended up with severe radiation poisoning. The radioman named Aikichi Huboyama finally died on 9/23/54 after a painful six months. This was HUGE news in Japan at the time.

Meanwhile....

Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka had gotten the approval to film Beyond The Glory. Everything was ready to go: the funds, the script, the crew, the actors, etc. Upon arriving in Indonesia, Tanaka was advised that his two stars had been denied work visas by the Indonesian government, therefore the film was scrapped.

On the flight back to Tokyo, Tanaka tried to figure out how to spend the money that he had been allocated. Mulling over recent news events, he got the idea to combine an American-style monster movie with a serious message about the threat of radiation and nuclear weapons tests.

Thus, a monster was conceived and cinematic history was made.

What do I win for stumping the Gojira genius?

64. Please summarize the plot for Godzilla '85.
Never got around to seeing it, and I remember being in third grade and this was THE "big-budget" spectacular movie-to-see of the year. Advertising everywhere. I was too young to see it, and no else seems to have seen it either. A summary?

65. Yeah, I checked that out from the library when I was in 4th grade.
Can't remember the plot details, only it was your pretty standard Godzilla movie only "big-budget" in the Godzilla sense of the word. There was a boring scene early in the movie where some guy demonstrates the tensile strength of some new kind of thread by leaning out a highrise apartment balcony. Even as a kid I thought "boy, that's going to be some important plot element later in the movie." Only it never panned out. Wtf?

74. That was actually from King Kong vs Godzilla
and that high tensile thread was use to attack the sleeping ape to baloons for transport to Mt. Fuhi where he would face Godzilla in the final showdown.

Did they just splice the footage into a new movie?

73. certainly
A ship named the Suka Maru is found with all crewmembers but one dead. He recounts the tale of giant monsters that attacked the ship. These are massive radioactive water fleas. (This subplot is sort of borrowed from Rodan where it was meganeuraon in the mines that first attacked the minor and harbingered the horrors to come).

Then, a submarine encounters something deep in the Japan Trench. It's destroyed but relays a sonar signature to America before that happens.

Japanese scientists begin tracking the origin of that signature. Finally after 30 years of calm something starts attacking the nuclear power plants of Japan. It's Godzilla, unseen since its demise in 1954. The Japanese Defense Forces battle to prevent Godzilla from destroying Tokyo. They dispatch the first Super X plane to fight the beast (it has cadmium missiles and armor sufficient to withstand Godzilla's breath, at least for a while). Meanwhile a doctor, an ornithologist specifically, isolates the bird songs that seem to draw Godzilla from one place to another and uses them to drive the beast towards Mt. Mihara.

During the climactic battle in downtown Tokyo, Godzilla is rendered unconscious by the Cadmium missiles. However, a Russian freighter triggers the launch of a nuclear warhead that explodes over Tokyo. Godzilla absorbs the radiation and awakens.

Lured to the top of Mt. Mihara, Godzilla falls into the volcano.

On an ultraman episode (don't remember which), it was very obvious they used a recycled Godzilla costume but made one change.
What was the change?
I give up if you can answer this one.
