aww.... my dawg hurt his paw
Don't know how. Got home from work last night and I thought he was walking a little funny. Then I noticed that once he got going, he moved OK, but when he first got up, he was limping. I probed around and his left front "ankle" is tender when I squeeze it.

I asked my dog-walker if anything had happened yesterday, and he said no, but they had gone on a VERY long walk - probably two or more miles. Tucker is a bulldog - they're not built for distance.

So this morning, when he got off the couch to greet me, he cried out when he landed on his paw. He's trying not to walk on it much.

I gave him 3/4 of an aspirin, so I hope that helps. I think he probably just strained or overextended something. I doubt he broke anything.

Is there anything else I can do? If it's not better in a day or two, I'll take him to the vet, but I suspect there's little they can do absent a broken bone, right?

4. how'd you know?
He DOES do that! He sees the cats do it, and tries to imitate 'em. He could've hurt himself that way, and not by walking too far.

6. We know how that goes....

This is PeeDee, I came home from work one day and noticed she was limping. Her rear knee was swollen up real bad so I took her to the vet-xrays showed no breaks so I got her some pain pills and kept her inside for the most part. She didn't get much better for a while so I took her back and the vet said it might take some time to heal up. She was limping/ not using that leg for 4 months! She is all better now and runs like a scalded dog!

I hope you friend heals up quicker than mine but don't be suprised if it seems to take forever to get better.

10. She is blushing right now!
She is the sweetest little dog I have ever had the pleasure of being a friend to. She had her pup about a week after her mother had her two pups. Angel (her momma) didn't care for nursing her pups much past four weeks so PeeDee let her two new brothers nurse along with her pup for quite a while. (I got the two of them plus the father two weeks before the births started- all are fixed now).

11. No, there are other things...
it could be arthritis (even if your dog is very young). If that's the case you want to know so you can think about pain relievers.

Take him to the vet!

19. my cat had what I thought was an injured paw
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 03:18 PM by Skittles
except it would come and go - one day he'd be limping, the next day not. I took him to the vet and it turned out to be a bone infection in his leg - and the on and off limping was a symptom. He was treated with cortisone but eventually had to take major antibiotics as it was quite serious.

I'm hoping your dog just has a tender foot that will be fine in a couple of days. :)

Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 05:38 PM by Skittles
we saw no injury of any sort, no bite. We were living at the farm back then. Gawd I'll never forget when my city vet told me it was quite serious and that it could kill my baby - I about freaked! I had taken him to the city vet after the limp returned following his second cortisone shot (I don't blame the county vet; he was more used to horses and cows than kitties). Oh, and Clancy gave us HELL when we gave him the pills, acted like we were tormenting him for three weeks, and the pills made him feel pretty lethargic. He would hide from us; one time I spotted just his ears in the back of a long closet and had to drag him out for his daily treatment. :(

20. Oh, poor Tucker!
Please give him extra love for me. :(

I would call the vet, let them know what's going on and see what they say. My vets are conservative (not in the political sense, but more in the self-care way...) and usually say to give it 24-48 hours and then if it hasn't improved to come in.

I hope he feels better soon.

23. The aspirin seems to be helping a lot
it's stiff when he first gets up (I have the same problem ) but once he starts moving around, he just barely limps. I think it's just a strain or sprain, and not a terrible one.

25. Aww, poor Tucker.
Hope he is ok very soon.
Hubby and I and our neighbor took our dogs (standard poodle and choc lab) to play at a lake in north Tally. After the dogs had been running around for awhile we noticed fresh blood in the grass. Started checking feet and found it was coming from our dog. He'd cut his front pad on some glass or metal. Had to have stitches and a bandage, which he promptly started to tear off. Put one of my socks over it so he'd leave it alone. Thought he'd just tear off the sock but he left it alone ("Mommie's" I guess). Had to put a baggie over the whole thing when he went out to keep sock and bandage dry.

26. awww....
At first his walker thought it might've been the pad of his foot - he was walking over some rough rock and gravel, but it definitely seems to be the "ankle". I think he just strained it a bit.

27. our neighbor's pup stubbed her toe...
she bumped one of her toenails rather hard and it caused the toepad to swell and be tender. If Tucker tends to drag his feet sometimes when he walks, or if it was just a long walk and he got tired, he could have sprained a toe or hurt one of his toenails. The poor doggie Maggie hobbled around for about 2 weeks.

Just watch him, as you're doing, and take him to the vet at the beginning of the week if there's no improvement....

31. He's been sleeping a lot today
but that's not too unusual for a bulldog.

When he first gets up, it hurts him. He cries a bit when he steps on it, but then once he starts moving, the limp gets less and less noticeable and after a few minutes, he moves pretty well. I think it's just stiffening up when he's off it for awhile.

I think it's gonna be fine. The aspirin seemed to help. I'll give him another tonight and just not take him for any walks for a day or two and let it heal.

I'm sure there's nothing broken, so I don't know that a trip to the vet would solve anything. She'd just tell me to give him an aspirin and try to keep him still for awhile.

47. A similar thing happened to my pup...
a while after he had been bitten by a tick, it seemed like his joints were totally immobilized. It caused him pain to even try to put his paw down, he winced at every attempt to move. It turned out to be the tick bite, the vet gave him some meds, and I started him on a low dose regimen of glucosamine chondroitin, just as a future preventitive measure. In a few days Quincy was so much better, after about two weeks good as new. Good luck.

if no improvement. I just can't imagine anything the vet could do for a strain beyond telling me to keep him inactive and perhaps give him an aspirin.

I think he'll be fine... just a little gimpy for awhile.

I've squeezed him all over. The shoulder's just fine - it's definitely in his "ankle" or technically, wrist, I guess. But dog arms are different - it's right above his paw - how's that?

He was a stray who'd been abused horribly. Ralphie was a sweetheart, though...his past couldn't make him mean. The only problem he had was that he really couldn't be left alone for the first couple of years I had him. The poor dog just couldn't stand that.

41. I'd just stick with the aspirin, and stay close to him
so he has a chance to rest his paw. Wolfie's occasionally twisted his foot in a hurry to get down the steps. I just keep his food and water close to his bed and hang out with him, so he doesn't need to get up.
