"The Passion Recut" - A Less Violent Torture (Just In Time For Easter)

LOS ANGELES -- Did you want to see "The Passion of the Christ," but you were afraid you couldn't handle the blood and the violence?

A new version of Mel Gibson's controversial biblical epic is coming out in theaters in time for Easter. "The Passion Recut," will go out on 500-750 screens nationwide, according to Variety.

"The Passion Recut" won't show Jesus being tortured as much. It'll open March 11. Though the new version will have about five minutes of the most violent footage trimmed, "Recut" will be released unrated because even with some of the scenes removed, it will still get an "R" rating, Variety reported.

"There are no new scenes, and the cuts are limited to the more violent aspects of the film, if that's the right term," Gibson's producing partner, Bruce Davey, told Variety. "The scourging scene in particular has been substantially adjusted."

"The Passion of The Christ," a brutal depiction of the final 12 hours of Christ's life, which was filmed in Latin and Aramaic, carried English subtitles in the United States. The DVD has English and optional Spanish subtitles. The film graphically chronicles the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus Christ (played by Jim Caviezel), and caused an uproar prior to its original release because some Jewish leaders feared it would spark a new wave of anti-Semitism.
