Oh god help me I blew the Whistle!!!!
I got sick of the sexist remarks at work so I told another person in power about it and got them called to the carpet. I just know I'll get fired for telling!!! Oh what did I do?

1. They might not get fired.
Reprimanded most likely though.

3. If you did, you'd have grounds for a lawsuit
Of course, it's a question of whether you'd want to pursue it but firing someone for lodging a legitimate complaint about sexual harrassment is, I believe, against various labor laws. What kind of work do you do and is there an HR office?

4. Document everything
If they fire for reporting sexual harrassment, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

5. If you get fired for telling
you can sue the pants off them for wrongful termination. Don't worry, it will be fine!

6. You're going to discover...
If working there is worth it or not. If you get canned for calling someone else on their sexist remarks, then they don't deserve you as an employee.

If decent people would stop bowing to the jerks, the jerks would be out of work instead of decent people.

Ya done good. Never doubt that.

8. I was sexually harassed at a job about 10 years ago and reported it.
The person who harassed me ended up being fired (he had a history of sexual harassment, plus he served jail time and probation for molesting his granddaughter - a real nice guy! :puke: :puke: :puke:).

I was fine and did not lose my job. Hang in there - you will be alright!      and good for you for reporting the creep!

19. document, document, document
and do for awhile as you are doing tonight (taking extra precautions). Cover the bases and if he does ever even make threats - go to the authorities (documentation in hand). More likely that he creates a worse and worse situation for himself than that he is successful in causing you real damage (esp if he is as potentially unhinged as your posts suggest.) Just take extra precautions to protect yourself in the short term.

21. I was very nervous and it was rough going for a while (the incident
happened at a refinery, where women workers are still somewhat of a novelty, even in the 21st century).

I feel for you so much - it takes a lot of courage to report sexual harassment.

I sincerely do not believe that you will be physically harmed - the company (and coworkers involved) would both have far too much to lose.
You could sue the pants off of the company (and they know it) and anyone involved in physical violence would lose their job and face jail time.

Please, as others have said, DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! Sit down and try to accurately remember every incident of harassment and write them all down. They will be necessary in the meetings which will follow your report of harassment.

Hang in there - more        for you!

9. You did good, and if you get fired, sue their asses off
If you had good grounds for complaining and ANYTHING happens to you, you have grounds for a major lawsuit.

As others here have said, document EVERYTHING.

And hold your head high.

13. I did the same thing, two weeks ago.
I was on the job three days, and these guys started saying things like "Women are bitches" and they're "Good for two things. And one of them ain't cooking, and the other one ain't cleaning", while I was working with a lady customer.

I was devastated, because it brought up a lot of issues of being molested when I was a kid, and am I only thinking of reporting because of all the favors I would get from women who hear about it? I was told to do "what feels right". It didn't feel right, so I just sat on it for a week and half. I thought that maybe this guy comes from a place that I don't come from and I should be tolerant. Then, it kept happening, so I asked for a meeting with my manager and the general manager of the store and another senior manager. They said "you should have come to us sooner" and "we'll take care of it".

Because I was crying, I told my new bosses that I was in therapy for being molested as a kid. And the senior manager started talking about how "if he were my father" and stuff, and then started telling me I am going to be in the workplace my whole life, and I should ask my therapist how I could "shut it off" and tell him the answer. I though about it later and the only real ways to "shut it off" are to dissociate, split off or develop multiple personalities, so I think if he asks again, I'm going to politely tell him to see his own therapist if he really wants to know.

It happened yet again two days after I had this meeting, and the manager I had was on the other side of the kitchen, so I went to her and told on him again, because I was feeling scared, spooked, haunted and I couldn't hear my customers because this guy was saying things and I was hyper-conscious of what he was doing over everything else.

They talked to him again, but he was still there today. It was just me and him, today at one point, and he started making comments about old people, and I said "don't talk like that to me", and then I had a little conversation, like a big brother, I guess, and he said "I didn't mean to be disrespectful." "Yeah, but you are." I told him. Later, he said something about not wanting to look at 'heifers' with another guy. I told him to "take it easy", and he told me that he was really talking about cows.

I don't think he's long for the job, anyway. Today, he got called into the office because he didn't punch out for his breaks, which he said that he has never done since he got the job.

It really feels like the Wild West in a lot of ways behind that Deli counter, so I'm wondering about management, and I've never been a member of a union before, so I don't know how that works in this kind of situation.

So, that's that story.

I haven't actually told anyone at DU about this, even though I post here often. I started with a new therapist, and we're going to work on how I can stop being such a victim.

I know what it's like. Playground politics dictates that you can't be a 'snitch'. But, this isn't a playground, it's a workplace. But, at the same time, I can't save the world, even in spite of what Jane Fonda says. One of the questions I'd like to explore in Therapy, is how being a Democrat works into this. Because, all I see is protests and cynicism and fighting injustice and everything. But, I'm hyper-vigilant, and I can't fight every fight, otherwise I'll be a paranoid schizophrenic again, scared of my own shadow.

15. Document everything from the past and the future
If your employment file is clean up to this date with no reprimands and all of a sudden you start getting written up or get dismissed for any reason..file a complaint with the EEOC.

18. Get a REAL whistle.

The loudest, most ear-splitting whistle you can find, and wear it around your neck.

If Mace is legal in your state, carry it.

You might also consider carrying whatever other type of self-defense weapon is legal--years ago women used hat-pins, but I suppose a good sharp sturdy letter opener might suffice. Sign up for a self-defense course immediately. One of the first things some of them teach you is a high-pitched, terrifying scream. If you can startle them, you'll have time to get away.

Then get your dad to round up some buddies of his--the bigger the better--and have them all drop you off at work and pick you up. If they can manage a few menacing glares, you might find the atmosphere getting a lot more polite very quickly.

20. Yes, I was going to say that too.
Write down the specifics of what happened or you saw, just in case. Your boss cannot tell anyone who made the complaint at this point, I think, so if you don't tell your co-workers they won't know who blew the whistle. If you're like me, you've probably already confided in someone though. But that doesn't change your leagal rights.

"Stand up, stand up for your rights" (Marley?)

Good job. That's a tough thing to do and the world needs more like you!
