PAY DELAY: How would you feel about this?
Fo rthe past 7 years I have worked for a school system that has paid once a month.... on the 20th.
For the past 7 years (others tell me for the past 15 years) if you have direct deposit, your money appears in the bank around the 18th.... people have come to depend on it. Well, this month that did not happen and they are not releasing our pay to our accounts until midnight on the 20th.

I know that pay day is actually the 20th.... but am I that wrong to be pissed off?

1. This is a common problem with direct deposit. They should have notified
you of any changes in the date and time of the deposit but probably by law they aren't actually required to do so. Being paid monthly is kind of a bite anyway - a lot of private companies and public agencies pay on a biweekly basis.

2. Pay
Well, yes and no. Payday is the 20th. But the 20th of February is a Sunday and as far as I am aware, no bank transfers can be made. Additionally, the 21st is a holiday with banks closed, so no transfers can be made. Now, in situations like this my employer will pay us on the day immediately prior to the Saturday, Sunday or holiday that the payday would fall on. In this instance, that would be the 18th. So you may be worrying for no reason.

3. You're pretty lucky

I had direct deposit with one employer - through the employees credit union. And they only updated the data base for credits/depositsat 7 AM in the morning. So, the money was not available (to cover checks - or for ATMs) until 7 AM on payday.

If payday was a Saturday, a Sunday, or a Holiday - we got paid the day before.

6. In most cases, and in your MOU it will state that their policy requires
that they post your pay in your accounts by the 20th of each month.

When you get it on the 18th, they're just keeping ahead of the game.

Yes, you are wrong to be pissed off, especially since you accomplish nothing by BEING pissed off. What's the point? Far better to direct your energy into enjoyable, don't you think? Life is too short.

To spend an hour of your life worrying about being pissed about something over which you have no control, and which actually doesn't effect you at all.... isn't worth it.

7. If you're supposed to get paid on the 20th
and you get paid on the 20th, then I can't see the problem. The fact that some people are reliant on the money appearing on the 18th is not really the school system's problem. If it were me, I would probably need to rely on overdraft protection to hold me over the extra 2 days and I wouldn't be happy about it, but the school system is still meeting it's obligation.

8. I think you are wrong
If pay day is the 20th, and the money is being put in the accounts on the 20th, then I don't see what the problem is.

9. No, you're not wrong.
If there's a clear precedent (and it seems that there is from what you've said here) then they should notify people who will be affected by any policy changes.
