'Lobsters don't feel pain'

Evening Standard
16 February 2005

It is a debate that has troubled seafood lovers everywhere - do lobsters feel pain when they are thrown into boiling water?

A new study, for the Norwegian government, has found lobsters and other invertebrates such as crabs and snails don't suffer at all - even though lobsters do tend to thrash in boiling water.

The report is aimed at finding if creatures without backbones should be subject to animal welfare legislation.

The study found the lobster's brain is similar in size and capability to an insect's and thrashing around in boiling water is simply an escape mechanism.

2. Who cares?
it's an big "bug". It's delicious. People gotta eat. Does it feel less pain when it is eaten by a bigger lobster? (They're canniblaistic, you know).

With all the real problems in the world crying out for a solution, why waste thought on this one?

3. Who cares, they taste good.
I haven't had lobster in ages because it's so expensive. I've never killed/cooked it myself.

Now I'm craving it.

4. Apparently, the lobster's brain is incapable of feeling pain.
But I echo some of the other poster's sentiments...who cares?

It's inhumane to boil a living creature alive, and I'm sceptical of the source of this "research" as Norway has a huge seafood industry.

9. maybe more research is done in Norway as a result of the fact that they
have a huge seafood industry. not refuting your argument, just saying...
