Have you ever fainted / passed out?
I have 3 times.

The first time doesn't really count, because it was on purpose. At a sleepover, we decided to hold our breath until we passed out for fun.

The second time I passed out in the tub. I was pretty much all under water except for my face. Not the best position to pass out, but I lived.

The third time I fainted, I was getting out of the bath. Yes, the water can be too hot, even if you can 'handle' it.

5. Only once and it was decidely unpleasant.
It was the very same day I started taking my HIV meds and was taking trazadone. I got up to answer natures call in the morning while my hubby was getting ready for work and as I turned to leave the bathroom afterwards everything went black and the next thing I knew, hubby was standing over me trying to nudge me back in consciousness on the bathroom floor.

Scary.

7. how about being knocked out?
if so, count me in twice.
both pretty serious car accidents.
first time, when I was 15, my head went throught the windshield because i had no seat belt on. lucky to remain alive.
second time, about 10 years ago, car rolled a couple of times, squishing the roof down toward the body, but fortunately did not squish me. I wore a seat belt that time, which probably saved me from being thrown out and possibly crushed.
When I came around, the car was on its roof and I was kinda suspended, held in place by the belt. Had a nasty gash in the side of my head.
the car stereo was still playing: "Vague Directions" by James mcMurtry. Honest.
each time i was out, i think, for several minutes.

be careful and always wear your seat belts!

11. One time...
in school; second grade, I passed out from turning my face red. We used to play a stupid game to see whose face could turn the reddest. I woke up in maybe 30 seconds later, and my mouth felt like it was full of sand. Very weird feeling I have yet to forget.

12. About a month ago
during a fight, after taking a punch right in the temple. I blacked out, and a few seconds later, I'm on the ground and have no idea how the hell I got there. And then came the 3 day long splitting headache.

One night a few months ago, I had been drinking and smoking weed one night. I fall asleep/pass out around 9:00. At about 10:30, I wake up, look at the clock, and freak out. It says 10:30, and I think I'm 3 hours late for school. I start to freak out. I end up running around looking for all my stuff for about 10 minutes before I look out the window and realize it's nighttime.

14. Not exactly...
About two years ago, I was in a four car accident, a Minivan hit the car behind me at a stoplight on red. That car pushed into mine, mine pushed into the car ahead of me. Thank the Gods I was wearing a seatbelt, it hit hard, my tailbone slammed into the frame of the seat. Anyways, I was didn't break any bones, but my Sternum and the Cartilage around it swelled up and put compression on my heart, not to mention it hurt like hell, only time I ever took steroids. Plus the wiplash from my head jerking back and forth, wierd thing was that it was the throat area that hurt the most, rather than in the back near the bones.

So I finally thought I felt better to get back to work, so I did, I worked mostly by myself at the time(janitorial). Anyways, I don't know how to describe it, well, not in detail. I started blacking out, but not losing conscieusness at the same time. I would be mopping the floor at work, then I would lose like 5 minutes of time, and still be standing there, having no memory of the last five minutes. Scared me to death, and considering that this was weeks after the accident, I thought I was mostly well. It got so bad that I blacked out 3 or more times a day, even my roommates noticed, they said I just had a blank look on my face, my eyes were open, I couldn't see, couldn't hear, and to this day have no memory of what happened at that time.

So I went to the doc, he gave me a coordination test right there, slap my hands at the same time on a tabletop, alternating palms and backhand. A normal person can do this no problem, me, my hands went ALL over the place, I couldn't corridinate the moves at all, and I damn near hit him by accident, I lost control of part of my body. Talk about freaky. His diagnosis, and I kid you not, "Shaken Baby Syndrome", in other words, during the car accident, even though my head hit no hard surface, it wiplashed with enough force to rattle my brain, all two cells, against my skull, also known as a concussion. Gave me some drugs and also told me NOT to go to work, for an additional MONTH, because of the physical strain. Plus I couldn't drive, I lucked out, I never had these blackouts when driving, that would have been deadly. He was afraid that I was susceptible to stroke of all things, why do docs like to scare you to death?

It was weird, because it took me a good week after recovery of my physical injuries to notice this. I mean, seriously, if you weren't doing anything at the moment, and lost 30 seconds of time, with no one around, would you notice?

15. Several times - usually from vaso-vagal reactions
Edited on Tue Feb-15-05 05:39 PM by Godlesscommieprevert
First time after giving birth to my firstborn. Then once when I had food poisoning and was dehydrated. The last time from horrible abdominal pain - that was a "grey-out event".

17. I was knocked out while cutting wood. Tree limb I was cutting
swung back and knocked me 10 feet to the ground. I landed on my back, also hitting my head and knocking me out. I was out for over ten minutes. When I woke up, the old farmer I was cutting down the tree for was poking me with his cane. He thought I was dead..

20. Yes...
I had just given blood and I was holding my infant son...I looked at the young girl standing next to me and just said "here" handing her my son and I hit the floor. Found out later that I did not weigh enough to have given blood.

21. Once, when I was a teenager...
I got up one morning, sat down to the breakfast table, told my mom I felt funny, and then it looked like a cheesy made-for-TV special effect, with my vision turning to tunnel-vision, and the tunnel looked longer and longer until all I saw was black, and sounds were echoing in my head.... my mom grabbed me by the shoulders yelling my name, and it sounded like she was so far away. I passed out for about 5 seconds, slumped in my chair (so she said), and then I woke up and felt perfectly fine. I have no idea what happened or why, but it felt really freaky!!!

22. 3 times.
1. Car accident in 1991. I was convinced that all I had to do was wash my face and I'd be fine. A nurse on the scene said I should stay still. I insisted, so she went with me. I made it about 4 steps.

2. Summer of 99. I was walking to work and I passed out on Canal Street. I went to the doctor. It's a mystery.

3. Car accident 2003. I was out for about 1/2 an hour. Then I was awake for another 20-30 minutes while they cut the side off the car. My seat had been compressed into a 4-inch space. Up to that point it was the worst pain I ever experienced, but I would have even worse pain a few days later when I delivered the fetus that had died in the accident. My deposition about this is tomorrow.

23. Passed out once
I was holding my cat at the Vet's office. The cat had a bad infection, and the Vet was going to drain the wound. He pulled out the scalpel, and all I remember was being carried into the waiting room. I was about 10.

25. Yep
I was chemically knocked out...

In high school biology we were doing expirements with fruit flys, and had to anesthsize them. Unfortunately, my bio teacher hadn't taught advanced science in 20 years, and her lab experience didn't show up that day.

We used ether to anesthesize the fruit flys, and since we had no hood, I would up over exposed. I packed up my books and made it to my history class, where I promptly passed out for the next 3 hours from the ether exposure. Apparently my idiot history teacher, who had tried to wake me up 4-5 times, didn't think to call the principle or a medic. Of course she didn't know I was just huffing ether...
