Oh my God--- I'm going to be a published author!
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 10:13 AM by Padraig18
I just retrieved the mail from our PO Box about 30 minutes ago, and there 'it' was--- 'it' is what every author dreams of receiving--- an acceptance letter from a publishing house! I've read it at least ten times, and had Tony read it too, just to be sure there was no mistake about what it said. My hands are shaking as I type this, but it's true--- Simon & Schuster has accepted my manuscript for publication! :D

My book, tentatively titled Some Dared Call It Treason: Copperhead Democrats in Civil War Illinois, focuses on the activities of the so-called 'Copperhead Democrats' in central Illinois between 1861-1865, with an emphasis on the role they played in the Great Charleston IL Riot of 1864 in which 22 people were killed. After 3 years of research, writing, editing and revising, I completed the final draft the first week of December; I sent copies off to multiple publishers and had yet to hear anything back--- until today.

I know no further details regarding sale price, advances, royalties or the like, or even a tentative date for publication, but I should know more this next week; I'm to contact my new editor on Monday to arrange a conference with her.

With no disrespect to the mothers among us, but I think I have a good insight into how you ladies must feel when you give birth!

46. It started out as a term paper for a freshman history class.
My late mentor/friend/editor/chief critic, Dr. Donald Tingley, read it and thought it had 'possibilities' as a book. The rest, as they say, is history (pun intended).

You should check out the Lincoln Farm historical site in Coles Co. some time, when you get a chance; it's VERY interesting. It's the actual Thomas & Sarah Lincoln farmstead (and a working farm), and is done as a historical interpretation.

The interpreters are all 'in period' when they work. The last time we were there, we went into the Lincoln's cabin, and the man who was sitting beside the fire invited us to 'set a spell and wait on Uncle Tommy and Aint Sary to git back'.

I always kid him cause he's been married before. LOL He says the weirdest part was that there were people that actually thought they were who they were living as. That and the Japaneses tourists were a hoot. So enthralled with them all the time.

That is my favorite period of American History! Such much has yet to come out from the Civil War years.

The country was so exhausted after those 4 years. they just wanted to make it all go away. Like the Library at Alexandria, knowledge was lost, never to retrieved again...:(

Once again. fantastic news!!! and congrat's...:D

Re: what you said about giving birth -- no need to apologize -- a couple of women I know who are moms and authors have told me that the parallels are strikingly similar. (I should give you a heads-up about the post-partum thing as well - don't be alarmed if you feel a bit deflated or frustrated for awhile, after you've wrapped up this project.) One of them told me, after seeing her (printed) opus in the university bookstore, "at least I didn't have to pay the big bucks to send it to college -- and I didn't have to wait for 18 years either!"
