Global Consciousness Project predicted the tsunami
The Global Consciousness Project and its study of the ability of major world events to produce fluctuations in its random number generators (the "Eggs") has come up here before at DU. Here's a recent update.

http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=126649

. . . during the course of the experiment, the Eggs have 'sensed' a whole series of major world events as they were happening, from the Nato bombing of Yugoslavia to the Kursk submarine tragedy to America's hung election of 2000. The Eggs also regularly detect huge global celebrations, such as New Year's Eve.

But the project threw up its greatest enigma on September 11, 2001. As the world stood still and watched the horror of the terrorist attacks unfold across New York, something strange was happening to the Eggs. Not only had they registered the attacks as they actually happened, but the characteristic shift in the pattern of numbers had begun four hours before the two planes even hit the Twin Towers.

<snip>

What could be happening? Was it a freak occurrence, perhaps? Apparently not. For in the closing weeks of December last year, the machines went wild once more. Twenty-four hours later, an earthquake deep beneath the Indian Ocean triggered the tsunami which devastated South-East Asia, and claimed the lives of an estimated quarter of a million people.

<snip>

But for Dr Nelson, talk of such psychic machines - with the potential to detect global catastrophes or terrorist outrages - is of far less importance than the implications of his work in terms of the human race. For what his experiments appear to demonstrate is that while we may all operate as individuals, we also appear to share something far, far greater - a global consciousness. Some might call it the mind of God. 'We're taught to be individualistic monsters,' he says. 'We're driven by society to separate ourselves from each other. That's not right. We may be connected together far more intimately than we realise.'

There's a new paradigm coming in, one that will overthrow the hyper-individualism of the corporationists and libertarians. I have the feeling that if I tried to post this article in GD it would get kicked out -- but its long-range political implications are as important as most of what regularly gets posted there.

1. Yep, Buddhism is turning out to be the most
scientifically correct of all the philosophies.

3. starroiute, Thanks so much.
This is great. As I read this, I wondered if I can get some random generators that would apply to my life. It's interesting that the curve looks flat unless there is a major world event. I wonder how that could be tweaked to be responsive to individual, family, neighborhood, etc. events. This also reminded me of Plato's concept of 'anemnisis.' He said that if you had any piece of a picture, even if just a fragment, you should be able to infer an accurate exact version of the entire picture through a mental process. Thanks for posting this.

4. Thanks Star! Our highest evolution is recognizing our inter-connectedness!

We are one global family. Causing harm, suffering anywhere, registers in the collective of all living beings.

What an important discovery, for those who need more evidence of what we know in our hearts and psyches to be true.

We must shift our awareness to love, to compassion, to inclusion.

5. VERY intriguing article
I want the technical details of this whole venture.

This could be pseudo-scientific hogwash, but it could be very true.

This would have incredible implications for economics, telecommunications, probability theory, and cryptography.

Again, I want some serious technical discussion. As a student of engineering, unlike my peers, I've come to learn that what is real is only a model for us anyway. Humans CANNOT deal directly with reality, no matter how hard we work to find the truth. We are limited by our physical nature, and this is possibly further proof.

Truth exists, but its comprehension may be beyond us. Ironically, the ETHICAL branch of philosophy has tackled questions like this centuries before the physical science and philosophy community began questioning our relationship with reality.

6. Reminded me of Jane Roberts' "Seth" books.
There was a single paragraph in one of them, where Seth "Channels" the idea that the mood of the society affects the weather. And that earthquakes may occur during times of civil unrest.

Great post. Thank You.
