New DU feature: The Greatest Page
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 01:34 PM by Skinner
As Democratic Underground has grown larger and busier, it has become increasingly difficult to find the most interesting or noteworthy topics. With thousands of threads posted each day, it's virtually impossible to wade through them all to find the best ones. With this in mind, we have created a new function for the message board, which we call the Greatest Page. Now you can easily find the Latest and Greatest discussion topics on the Democratic Underground message board. (Get it?)

The Greatest Page lists discussion topics which have been recommended by DU members. Topics can be recommended for 24 hours after they are first posted on our message board. The Greatest page shows topics that have received at least two recommendations, and topics remain on the page for 48 hours. To recommend a topic, click the link on the post that says "Recommend Topic for Greatest Page." Members are unable to recommend their own topics.

To go directly to the Greatest Page, click this link:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=greatest_threads

You can also access the Greatest Page by clicking the "three thumbs-up" icon at the top of the forum Lobby and Latest pages. Or you can click the blue link at the top left corner of each page, which says "Lobby / Latest / Greatest".

We are very excited about this upgrade. We believe it will make it much easier for visitors to find the best stuff on DU. Enjoy!

Skinner
DU Admin

Please be aware that the DU administrators can easily track which members recommend which threads. Individuals who abuse this feature will lose the privilege of recommending topics.

3. Abuse the feature?
I'm not clear on what that would consist of.

(Why am I always the one to ask questions like this? Yes, how can I abuse it?)

5. For example...
trolls recommending the most inflammatory or divisive topics, to sow discord among our members, or a group of members secretly organizing to "freep" their pet topics so they will get greater exposure.

4. I was hoping that I wasn't going insane...
when I saw the "Greatest" feature at the top today and thought, "Wow...I am either crazy or thats' new."

16. I'm Not Sure How That's an Either/Or Proposition
Clearly, it can be new AND you can be crazy all at the same time.

20. Please, don't...
my world is insane enough as is, if you make me start questioning the unquestionable I might go off the deep end never to return. :wow:

6. Good job Skinner. One question
Will the greatest nomination nominate the thread for homepage as well?

This is a perfect way to handle some of your concerns from last week. It promotes the best, without overtly punishing the not so good. Thanks!

7. Yes.
A recommendation for the Greatest Page is a nomination for the homepage.

I need to update the homepage to reflect that.

11. Excellent, I love this
It keeps good topics around, instead of letting them just quickly disappear on a busy day.

I love this feature. :loveya:

14. 2 votes is too few.
I think it's a great idea, but it's not working very well, IMO. I'm seeing all kinds of redundant crap on the greatest page. I think it should be at least a 5 vote minimum.

Thanks.

15. We can easily increase the minimum if we decide it is necessary.
At the moment, I think two votes works just fine.

If you want to find the stuff with more votes, just look at the right column. There you have everything, sorted by number of votes.

21. A possible tweak -- can it list them based on how many people
recommended it, so that the really highly recommended articles appear at the top?

What does everyone think?

Would it be possible to have an option to show the Greatest page INSTEAD of the Latest page by default?

I feel like I'm amongst professionals. I even got my DU bumper sticker yesterday. It's just wrong to streamline my chaos.

Skinner's a genius. I hate that.
