8. just last week I noticed a new short story of his
in one of those egghead mags I like, Harper's or the New Yorker. I was glad to see he was still working and still alive. So this is sad news.

PS, why was this moved from LBN to the Lounge? It's LBN by any standards. Admins???

9. One of the most prolific playwrights of our times
"The Crucible", "Death of a Salesman", "After the Fall" . . . the list goes on and on.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Miller.

10. Miller and Kazan
A look back at an unsettling time in American history, the McCarthy era, through the prism of a torn friendship between two artistic soulmates: writer Arthur Miller (b. 1915) and director Elia Kazan (1909-2003). In 1952, Kazan angered many in Hollywood by naming names before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Not only did he cooperate with the committee, he took out a full-page ad in The New York Times justifying his actions. Shortly after, Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, in which the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692 are used as a parallel for McCarthyism. In 1999, a new controversy emerged when Kazan received an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Who would clap and who wouldn’t? An unlikely defender emerged: Arthur Miller, who had defied the committee and faced jail time. “My feelings toward that terrible era are unchanged,” Miller wrote, “but at the same time history ought not to be rewritten. Kazan did sufficient extraordinary work in theatre and film to merit acknowledgement.” A documentary based on excerpts from Miller and Kazan’s memoirs.

11. Miller's one of my favorite playwrights
He took the themes of Greek tragedy and put them in a uniquely American language and setting.

Rest in peace.

12. He's probably happy to be outta here
I can't imagine that the man who penned "The Crucible" is happy with the way things are headed in this country.

RIP Arthur.
