Does anybody use a pop-up blocker that works on Internet Explorer
even coming through when I'm on AOL. Even when I'm trying to type emails. Evn when I'm not technically online, but with broadband, you're always connected, unless the power is turned off. AOL doesn't have a fix. I've tried several of them, and nothing works. AAAARRRRGGG!

1. Google toolbar, free and the best
Edited on Fri Feb-11-05 06:50 AM by DainBramaged
Unless you have a pest 'toolbar' installed, then you need more than a popup blocker.:( The 'even when I'm not online is a bad sign.

Then install this:

3. Thanks, I'll try those tomorrow. I'd tried the yahoo one, and it did nothi
There is a "websearch toolbar"" which keeps reinstalling itself, or won't be deleted. We use Wevroot's Spysweeper, Norton Anti-Virus, and I've tried the free trial on the Webroot Pop-Up Washer, with absolutely no change. Weird thing is that most of these pop up on my desktop PC, not the laptop, and they are connected to the same system, Adelphia broadband. Is it possible that since the laptop is wireless and the desktop is direct wired to the router, that there is some difference in that?

How do I uninstall your software from my computer?

If you decide that our software is not right for you, you can easily remove them through the Add/Remove Programs menu in your Microsoft Windows control panel. To uninstall our software, please do the following:

Click on the Start button and select Settings and then Control Panel. If you are running Microsoft XP, you can go directly to the Control Panel from the Microsoft Windows Start button.

When the Control panel window opens, double-click on the Add/Remove Programs Icon.

When the Add/Remove Programs Properties window opens, locate the software listing for that you would like to uninstall from the list of installed programs. Our software includes: 'WebSearch Toolbar', 'WebSearch Tools', 'Search Assistant' and 'Win-Tools Easy Installer'.

Click once on the program to be uninstalled and then click on the Add/Remove button and follow the instructions.

MS anti-spyware should remove the rest of it. One other thing, go to IE Tools/preferences/privacy/advanced/block third party cookies. Mozilla is a good substitute, but since corporate America hasn't embraced it, use it for non-standard surfing (searches, kid stuff, etc).

2. Something free?
For free I'd recommend you switch over to Mozilla Firefox. It will block pop-ups and you can get a free extension to block ads. I know that's probably not quite the answer you were looking for.

If you don't mind paying for something. I recommend a program called "Ad Muncher". The advantage of the latter is that it acts as a proxy. As programs that access the Internet will have to go through it; it will block all manner of things like pop-ups and ads in any program accesses the Internet.

4. It doesn't have to be free. My sanity is worth more than that. I've tried
a couple of free trials for a day at a time, to no avail. I'll be checking out all of these.

6. Use Mozilla.
No ActiveX, so things can't install themselves without you knowing, and very effective popup blocking.

if I dumped it, though I don't know why she doesn't want to just use AOL. Adelphia supplies IE, and MSN as part of the fee. I still don't know if there is any reason not to dump it.

16. It's part of the OS, so you can't get rid of it...
but you CAN switch. You can access Myspace with Mozilla just fine, and AIM is a standalone program, so it makes no difference WHICH browser you use (although installing Mozilla and making it the default browser will mean any links clicked on from instant message windows will open in Mozilla, and not IE).

27. I use both, and the only problem
is going back and forth. Close buttons, expand buttons and such are on opposite ends of the windows. The only reason I like drone machines is the three button mouse, but even that is available for newer macs.

All computers use the MAC Finder interface anyhow, so habits are easy to break.

Try one sometime. They are faster, have better graphics, the old saw about not enough software is no longer valid, and their Industrial design is unmatched.

They are cooler machines.

14. That's extreme
Why do MAC users act like fundies when they decide that replacing an entire computer is the solution for every PC problem?

I've been using PC's since '89, and I don't care what MAC users say, for the vast majority of users (95%+), it's VHS vs. BETA, and vhs won the war. The WORLD excluding geeks and developmentand visual production folks use PC, why confuse the issue.

28. Some of us started with MACS
We haven't replaced them. Macs are more stable, crash less, have better graphics and are faster megahertz to megahertz.

No one is telling you to switch.

BTW, if everyone felt like you, there would only be one color of paint, one type of car and one style of house. I am glad we have choices.

Why in the hell must there be a war, anyhow?

I use a Mac at the office with Explorer and Safari. It's an eMac. And there are popups galore. I can't use a popup blocker because the company won't allow us to download any software.

17. if you are running XP
upgrade to service pack 2, its free and it ends popups. Otherwise download the google toolbar and its popup blocker. Or do both. Also Microsoft released a free anti-spyware/adware program, and it seems to do a pretty good job. If your kids are running a-o-hell then you need every filter tool available. Best advice, if you can afford it, get them their own pc so they can suffer with the results of their misbehavior.

20. ok I read their report
here: http://www.infoworld.com/Windows_XP_SP2_(Service_Pack_2)/product_47393.html?view=1&curNodeId=0

and it claims that some apps might not work, although it doesn't actually mention any that didn't. This sort of review comment is, in my opinion, irresponsible as it is simply rumor mongering, not reviewing.

The reviewer installed SP2 on two machines one of which had some problem on install, although once again the reviewer, who did not appear to be particularly on top of things technically, did not get specific about what the problem was or how it was resolved. He did get in a slam about Indian service people, who while darkish, cow worshipping, and living in India, appeared to solve his unspecified problem.

My experience, on about 10 or so systems I have upgraded, and at least a dozen more among people I work with, is that the upgrade completes without problems and the result is a more secure system. I have not seen a single issue with any applications.

The Internet Explorer updates in sp2 are critical. SP2 is now widely deployed. It would have been prudent to hold off for a few weeks when it first came out, but at this point that advice is a bit on the silly side. Could you have a problem? Yes of course you could, but in all liklihood you won't. The OP already has a problem, that is why she posted, sp2 is a solution.

26. Do you know who R&R is, or General Motors?
They DO NOT certify the use of SP2 with their software or within their dealerships due to conflicts with their GMAccess/Dealer world sites and servers and with the R&R ERA and EDM software. Additionally, second party body shop and parts inventory supplier software is incompatible.

If (SP2) may be Wonder Bread for the mases, but for those that make the bread, it sucks.

So if RadicalMom is running ERA and EDM software from R&R she should certainly not upgrade until they've certified their apps for it.

24. Try Avant Browser, it piggybacks off of IE
.
.
.

but you can still use IE "naked" if you want/have to, and it's a real small download,(File Size: 1.32MB Estimate Download Time: 3 minutes (56K Modem) and free.

Some of the info:

Built-in Pop-up Stopper: Easily eliminate unwanted pop-up pages automatically with just one click. (a wee icon in the status bar lets you allow pop-ups in sites where you need them)

Multi-Window Browsing: Browse multiple web pages simultaneously. All opened pages can be easily stopped, refreshed, closed or arranged with one click. (Similar to Mozilla and FireFox, but ALL toolbars are detachable and can be moved individually to the sides, bottom or "floating" anywhere in your screen)

Real Full Screen Mode and Alternative Full Desktop mode: When you enable Full Screen Mode, all you see is the webspace, with no toolbars or other clutter. They are simply autohidden! Move your mouse over the top or bottom and find the toolbar and tab bar respectively. Avant Browser also provides Full Desktop Mode, which is the same as Full screen mode, but differs in that your windows task bar stays visible. (this is REAL cool when viewing large images, or just lets you view MUCH more of a document, page)

Built-in Yahoo/Google Search Engine: Avant Browser provides a built-in search engines, Yahoo and Google. Built-in search engines enable user to search for web pages, images, groups, directories, news, lyrics and software in Internet. International users will be glad to know that you can set avant to utilize any of up to 64 google mirrors by default!

Full IE Compatibility: Avant Browser comes with all Internet Explorer functions, including Cookies, ActiveX Controls, Java Script, Real player and Macromedia Flash. IE bookmarks are automatically imported into Avant Browser.

[br />
Clik on the above image, 5 minutes later, and ur all set up!

Imports ur favorites and all -

Enjoy

Oh, I use Mozilla 1.6, (dumped 1.7 and FireFox, found 1.6 more user friendly) most of the time, but some apps like hotmail run better with the Avant/IE browser.
