more snotty bitching about the english language
i have to get this off my chest.

the point is now "MOOT", not "mute".

and you get the "GIST", not "jest".

christ almighty, people, lets pick it up here! we're an empire now; lets act like it.

11. Yes, as in "Ent-moot"
The Professor did know his language(s).

My inner pedant fumes when someone informs me "it's a moot point"--meaning "shut up!"

26. It's irrelevant....
I have "irrelevant" as the third entry for the definition of "moot" in my American Heritage Dictionary. Isn't that what people are really getting at when they use this word?

7. Incorrect case
I almost throw up everytime I hear people say things like, "between he and I." For those who don't know, "between" is a preposition, and like all prepositions in English, take the objective case. It should be "between him and me."

Okay, I just jumped off my soap box.

25. Coummounwealth Spellynge
Actually, phony Brit spelling by Americans who want to put on airs. Often with "i" changed to "y" to make it look more faux-Druidic.

Egads, there was an epidemic of Commonwealth Spelling mania in the early Macintosh days. It was enough to make a person "rippe his Bouddyce".

Note: People who were raised in British Commonwealth nations, including Canada, are automatically and forever exempt from this characterization. Except for the faux-Druid Y thing.

I mean, you don't see any modern Spanish speakers spelling with the initial Y (as in "Ysabel and Ferdinand" or "San Ysidro") which was archaic by 1800.
