ACCCK!!! I am drawing the house from Hell!!!
6800 sq. ft. 8 bays, three overhangs and a bunch of ever loving useless space. Somedays being an appraiser is awesome. This isn't one of 'em. ;)

1. Who Buys That Crap?
The next thing that happens is that after the owners move in, they find that the actual living area is too small and need an expansion.

It's the Not-So-Big home for me.

2. try drawing the floorplan of a castle!
varying wall thicknesses, turnpike stairs and nothing is square...I did a survey of a big one about a year ago. And I can't use Autocad so it was out with the Rotrings (younger staff don't know wtf a Rotring is - they think it's a dog) and my ancient parallel motion board...

6800 sq feet is bloody huge...about four reasonable family homes over here.

3. On an AIBD forum recently,
we were discussing a 65,000 SF house. The owner evidently explained it away saying he has a "large family"

How anyone could possibly need a home that is 32 times the size of my comfortable house for four, I'll never know.

Biggest one I ever designed and built was 4,000 SF, but that was kicking and screaming. I don't like t go over 2,500 SF.

5. oh oh oh I want to live there
I love big ol' mist shrouded haunted houses. Do you think it has a private ancestral cemetery and crypt? How 'bout a medieval nun or two walled up alive?

My bags are packed, I am ret 2 go!

6. OMG! I turned down a "castle" this morning!
LMAO! I declined a castle this morning (my license has gone inactive so I'd have turned it down anyway!) it was described by the owner as a "castle." I kind of laughed and said yeah--sure--they all are a castle and he came back with--"NO, it is a CASTLE. Three other appraisers have already turned me down."

I'm thinking--aw jeesh--just FIND three comparable sales for THAT in rural Champaign county! Maybe a geodesic DOME would be easier to appraise...

8. We were asked to appraise a geodesic dome once.
I shudder thinking about it. It was horridly built and we were unable to find any comps, even after searching state wide. It wasn't worth going outside the state. I always wonder who ended up being stupid enough to risk their license over it.

9. I ended up taking the easy way out.
I scanned and imported the city sketches. I hate doing that, but it's dead on with my measurements. :)
