Who believes in the 5 second rule?
Does the surface involved make a difference?

3. In a cat infested house, 5 seconds is usually too long
if the object in question is in anyway able to pick up cat fur, you can forget about it.

Cookies, however... usually okay.

4. You mean in driving? The 2 second rule? Yes, the surface can
make a difference, and so can the advent of anti-lock brakes which stop a hell of a lot faster than conventional ones.
5 seconds is a lot of space.

I try to keep 2-3 and it seems to work

5. As a former line cook at Applebees
I believe.

For the record, it was NOT an official policy of Applebees Inc, just an unspoken rule. It's a no-brainer at home.. My floor isn't that dirty.

6. I believe in it. But the surface does count.

Clean kitchen floor: Yes.
Sidewalk: Ewwwww!

You must also say: "Five second rule" out loud while picking it up.

11. Although, hospital floor.... fuggedabodit!
No such thing in hospitals. Hits the ground, gone, gone, gone. I don't even re-use pens I drop at work.

10. Surface makes all the diff.
Dirt floor? No. Dirty floor? No. Most anything else is fair game.

12. It's not necessarily 5 seconds.
On a clean kitchen floor, ok.

I saw a kid at a livestock sale drop a banana on the ground, pick it up, brush it off and proceed to eat it. For that and a lot of other stuff I reported the family to Children's Aid.

It depends on the material dropped, too. Bread dropped butter-side down tends to pick up cat hair. I determined this through extensive personal research.

Cheezies, 10 seconds m,ay be appropriate on most interior, fairly clean surfaces.

It's an iteresting topic, worthy of a Doctoral dissertation by someone, although not me.

I hope my random thoughts are semi-coherent.

13. Depends on the dryness of the food
With doritos, you have up to about 10 minutes :D

Sometimes you need 10 minutes ( to finish the rest of the bag and still have the munchies ) :smoke:

14. Yes. Your hands are probably just as dirty as the floor...
but if its got hair on it - I just dump it. Not for cleanliness so much, as palatability.

A friend who was in the Army, said his sniper friends would hang out in trees for days, eat anything they could - as dirty as it was. When they came back and ate in the mess tent, he said if something so much as get near the floor - they would refuse to eat it!
His quote: "you won't eat that for being on the floor for 1/2 a second, but you ate a pound of dirt in the trees?"

16. There was actually a scientific study
That for the most part validated the 5 second rule. It was rewarded one of the "Ignobel Prizes" last year.

18. Isn't it the five minute rule?
And what matters the surface?

You can always wipe it off on your jeans...
