Gooood Morning DU! Attn: Gay DUers
:donut: How is everyone this morning? Pretty eventful day yesterday, eh?

Did anyone catch Wife Swap on ABC last night? If you did, isn't it scary that people in the world are actually like that?? (Brief summary for those of you that missed it - Lesbian couple swapped lives with a conservative, Repub family of which the wife was black and the husband white. The wife was a COMPLETE bitch who actually told the lesbian mom that switched places she was concerned with her 12 year old daughter's safety. She went as far as to insinuate the woman was a sexual predator.) The woman that switched places was so upset that you could honestly feel her hurt from the TV. I'm still in awe. So, a big  to all our gay and lesbian buddies here on DU. I knew that it wasn't easy for you before I watched this, but I know even more how close minded people can be. I love you all! :grouphug:

2. Sounds completely phoney...
Gee, it couldn't have been a completely scripted "reality" show, could it?

4. To be honest,
it could have been. But still, the woman's hate was still there and that's something I'm not so sure you can script.

3. That's what I thought also.
But it wasn't so much that, it was what the woman said to the lesbian couple when they met face to face. I couldn't BELIEVE the shit that was coming out of her mouth!

7. What didn't she say actually.
She (paraphrasing here) basically said that they were in it for monetary reasons and didn't believe that their togetherness constituted a real family (the two women were raising a daughter) and that they were depraved. She pretty much kept saying how it was disgusting and immoral. And get this! After they were finished with the swap and confrontations, they always go back to the families to see if things have changed, etc. When they went back to the Repub family, they actually showed them around the dinner table with their bibles PRAYING for the lesbian couple. Ugh. :puke:

19. Interview with Lesbian Mom about Swap.
What a wicked person Kris Gillispie was/is. Very unChristian person if you ask me. Someone should have reminded her that less than 50 years ago many Christian Fundamentalist regarded interracial marriages as depraved.

Here an interview with Nickie Boone. She had to live with the gay-hater for 10 days.

======================================================================
When TV’s Wife Swap landed an ultraconservative Texas homemaker in a two-mommy household in Arizona, the homophobia flowed hot and heavy. How did it feel to be in the direct path of the bigotry? The Advocate talks to lesbian mom Nicki Boone
By Dave White

An Advocate.com exclusive posted February 8, 2005

It was only a matter of time before ABC’s Wife Swap went there. In this week’s episode (airing Wednesday, February 9, at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific), liberal-leaning Arizona lesbian Kris Luffey trades places with Texas conservative Christian Kris Gillespie. And while Gillespie’s staid, taciturn husband, Brian, and their three teenage children are depicted as taking the lesbian invasion of their upscale Texas home mostly in stride, Luffey’s partner, Nicki Boone, her 8-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and the virulently antigay Gillespie didn’t exactly “somehow form a family.” Boone spoke to Advocate.com about her 10-day ordeal with the perfect Christian mom :

Q. I just want to say before we get started that I’m from Texas myself, and while there are plenty of antigay Christians out there, there are also a sizeable minority who would have treated y’all a whole lot nicer than Kris Gillespie did.

A. Yes, but ABC wouldn’t have wanted that, right?

Q. True. Fireworks make better TV. How long where you swapped?

A. Kris wasn’t with us very long. About 10 days.

Q. Five days of your routine and then five days where she made all the rules. Did you have any expectations going in?

A. I knew what I was getting into. I assumed we’d be paired with an extreme opposite. I figured it would be a conservative heterosexual couple. We were actually just hoping to be seen as a gay family on TV, to show people that our lives are not very different from anyone else’s.

<snip>

Q. Did Kris Gillespie ever inspire genuine fear in you?

A. No, I’m not afraid of people like her. Kris , on the other hand, there were times when she was. She and Brian had some arguments that didn’t make the episode, and she also had to go to church with them. It was “Marriage Amendment Sunday, Call Your Senator Monday” day. So she had to sit through a gay-bashing sermon. And Brian signed an amendment petition in front of her at church. It was very emotional for her.

<snip>

Q. In the final moments of the show, did Kris Gillespie actually call you sexual predators?

A. She used those words. She used them from the beginning. She was concerned about her daughter—that my Kris was going to molest her.

Q. Oh, God.

A. Yes, not that Kris was going to convert her daughter to lesbianism, but that she was literally going to molest her.

Q. And while the episode shows you all talking about having learned something about yourselves during the filming, Gillespie announces very clearly and very plainly and in a very unpleasant tone, that you had “brought nothing to table.”

A. That really hurt Kris, and that was one of the other reasons she cried at the end. She went to their house and really tried to do some helpful things, buying art supplies for the daughter, giving the kids a little more freedom. was just incredibly mean-spirited.

Q. Are y’all going to put the Gillespies on your Christmas card list, just to annoy them? Make yourself a little holiday thorn in their side every year?

A. No, no. I’m not like that. I can’t antagonize people that way. What I hope is that Kris watches the episode and allows herself to process the idea that she is actually that person that she sees on-screen, and that maybe she can learn some compassion and some better ways to behave.

8. True, but there was nothing to fear!
The woman was sooooo nice and she really went out of her way to make sure the Repub kids got to have a good time when it was her turn to make the rules. The poor kids spent so much time doing chores and bible study, they never got to do anything fun. There was no threat, just some baseless accusations that were unnecessary.

9. G'day, Blondie!
:hi: Glad I missed it. A republican interracial couple? Isn't that an urban legend, like Bigfoot, Sasquatch, compassionate conservatives, honest elections? LOL

Glad to see you, too.

13. Better
I was sick most of the weekend, but I did watch the Super Bowl at my brother's place. Only 4 showed, but we had food and drink for at least 10.

Couldn't workout again 'til yesterday. Just because I didn't feel great doesn't alter the fact that there's...

No doughnut for you! :P

:D But hopefully you'll be able to chill and take a break this weekend!

Me?? A break?? No way! I most of Saturday night off so I watched a few movies then went to bed. That's pretty much the extent of my "break". BTW, how's your mom doing?

11. TV seemed to be big on GAY last night. Law and Order had a psycho lesbian
killer obsessed with a RW media star's wife who manipulated her to kill her husband. Way to take the focus off the O'Reilly-like sexual-harrassment suit... Let's have a crazy dyke blow his head off...

Oh... and yes... I have definitely gotten the "she might be a predator" feeling in the past from ignorant straight people. And even after 42 years, there's a hesitant part of me when I meet new people about what dark thoughts they might be having... it is annoying to say the least.

Thanks for your support Blondie!

12. I can't even imagine!
Good grief! Didn't realize Law and Order was about that, but hell! At least it didn't involve people that are actually breathing in the world, ya know? Just characters.

I have NO CLUE how that thought even runs through their stupid little minds. I cannot even fathom how these people wake up in the mornings. And I definitely applaud you. I think I'd turn into a big bawling mess if I were confronted like that! Much love for ya!

20. On a brighter note..TLC's Clean Sweep had a gay couple.
Who's messy house got cleaned up. These two guys got together 5-6 years ago, and one just couldn't get his share of the house. They made over their bedroom to be more zen and intimate. They had a "come to Jesus" moment with a tender hug and cry in front of that Australian who tells them to throw everything away.

It was frank, as honest as any of their other episodes, and unlike that old Melrose Place, they didn't make any big deal out of two men in a close partnership.

21. you knew from the beginning the Gillespie chick was a bitch
when she was going through their books before anyone was home. She came across two books, one a book on lesbian couples and another on raising problem children. "Hmm.. wonder if there is a connection," she said. Obviously a gay couple could only raise problem children and of course heterosexual couples never do. Her and all her talk of a "life of excellence" made me sick. Of course insisting the republican sign would be displayed in the front yard was sickening to me. Maybe the lesbian could have placed a burning cross in the Gillespie yard to return the love.

The part about being afraid the lesbian would molest the little girl was painful for me, but not a surprise. The exact same thing happened to me. There was a family from church I had stayed with when things with my family were tough. I was very close to them and considered them just like a second pair of parents, and their sons my brothers. Eventually I came out to them. Their first question to me was if I had ever done or attempted to do anything with their son Brian was was only 14 at the time. Of course I had not and it hurt deeply to hear that from someone I loved. None of it went well. That was several years ago and the family still will not speak to me.

22. I want to ditto your sentiments
I was utterly disgusted last night watching that.

You know what slays me?? People who are out Republicans/conservatives who voted Bush but say "I cannot believe people are like that!" and say they are for gay marriage. :wtf:

Yeah right. What a bunch of stupid morans.
