MY JOB SEARCH IS FINALLY OVER!!!!!
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 12:46 AM by MarianJack
I got an offer today for my first choice job after 21 months of subbing, answering incoming call from info-mercials or nothing at all!

I can't believe that I'm excited about the money I'll making. Though it's not bad, it's a hell of a lot less than I expected to make at my age. It is, however, better than being a 50 year old pizza delivery driver with a (useless) Master's Degree. And this company DOES promote from within.

I start on Monday, get my first pay on 2/25 and WILL FINALLY GET MY GOLD STAR ON 2/26! :bounce:

Anyway, I just thought I'd share some good news with my fellow DUers! I don't expect a lot of people to respond to this thread, but I'll answer everybody that does. It might be in the morning, though, I'm starting to get sleepy! :boring:

10. Our Advice To Our Son Will Be...
...to cover his ears and hum when a High School teacher says that a college education is "absolutely necessary" to make a living.

I have a Master's, my wife has her Bachelor's, my Brother in law has a H.S. Diploma and is a truck driver. Guess which ONE makes about $25,000 more than the other 2 COMBINED!

BTW, my wife has been a teacher for 13 years, I was a teacher and am now going back into Mental Health (not much room for nearly 50 year old teachers in Maine).

Our advice to our son will be "Find something that pays well and you enjoy"

8. Congratulations and best wishes to you. My sister-in-law was let go
last week after 24 years with the same bank. She is 51 and is not looking forward to finding a new job. She did thankfully get a decent severance package but isn't near ready to retire,at least financially.

Life in a republican led country is tuff and getting worse all the time.I am happy for you and hope it works out well.

13. I Hope She Finds Something...
...faster than I did!

I hate to say this, but I'd suggest taking the dates OFF of her resume! I didn't get called for 1 single interview until I did.

There's nothing untrue on my resume, but it makes me look 40ish instead of 50ish.

18. Thanks for the tip, I will let her know. What really is crappy, is she
knows her stuff(mortgage banking) backwards and forwards but was let go where they kept a 30 something who was really wet behind the ears.

I guess they saved a few bucks and with mergers that is the main motivator.

She is a sharp lady so I am hopeful she finds something fairly quickly.

Congrats again!!

28. My Wonder Woman With Knitting Needles...
...made a few suggestions.

Has your sister in law considered starting her own mortgage brokering business? It may be very profitable, especially if she helps people who are hearing a litany of "NO" from the banks.

I have no grudges against younger people, but I think that employers are thinking not only about how much middle aged people will have to be paid, but also about the cost of health insurance, possibilities of illness, etc. We can't blame a young person for being young. We CAN do what we can to change the corporate mentality so that they don't go through what we do 20-30 years from now!

Best Wishes, prayers and thoughts for your sister in law!

9. Best wishes, but don't down that degree yet.....
believe me. My hub (53) doesn't have one but really knows his shit (manufacturing procurement) and is having one hell of a time getting someone to hire him perm. They all want these wet-behind-the-ears, born the silver spoon way, college brats. He's contracting for Lockheed right now & his boss is trying to get him made permanent but it takes time.

So, go out there and knock 'em dead my friend. Here's to a long and fruitful career.

14. I May Have Been a Little Too Strident, jojo54,...
...but there are a lot of useless degrees out there now.

Unfortunately, colleges are in business to give degrees in volumn, not ones that will necessarily get employment. I saw a great t-shirt a few years ago. It said "I have a Liberal Arts degree. You want fries with that?"

Of course, you can get a PHD in Soviet Studies and get a really good job from your husb... OOOPS, I mean the pResident!

38. Congratulations!
I hope I'll be able to say something similar real soon, particularly since my cobra runs out sometime in March. I've been looking for a job forever. Found a part-time job, which I like, but can't exactly support myself on just 16 hours a week of work. And I'm also a 50-year-old with a useless master's degree. Congrats again! :toast:

42. A Residential Organization...
...that provides in home help for mantally retarded men and women.

I wanted a supervisory job, got a direct care job, but this is an organization that has a "promote from within" philosophy. The pay isn't spectactular, but for the same $$$ my wife is paying for hers and our son's health insurance, I'll be able to insure all 3 of us with dental, so that's a BIG positive after being on the republican health plan for almost 2 years. You know their health plan, it's called "Don't Get Sick!"
