Picture Time Again! Post a picture of yourself, then tell a story...
This was taken about 11 years ago, hanging off a streetcar in San Francisco. I like it because I look much happier than I actually was at the time. I was visiting my girlfriend's family in Marin County, and had the opportunity to start my life over and move to San Francisco from Milwaukee and move in with her at her mom's huge house in San Raphael. I had been doing a lot of soul searching, and after a year together, I was doubtful about the relationship. She was fantastic, beautiful, smart, talented and funny, and although I had a great time in SF, I realized shortly after that the main problem was not her but that I was not in love with her. We said goodbye a few months later and I have never seen her again...

Now it's your turn, post a pic of yourself, then tell a story about it.

3. Me looking scruffy but happy.

This was taken a month ago a day after the birth of my nephew. I'm so lucky I got to be here for that because I was living in Los Angeles for the past few years but had to come back when I was in a wheelchair after a really horrible head-on collision.

I'm moving back to Los Angeles, though, in a month. I'm very excited but I am kind of sad that I'll see my nephew grow up mostly through pictures.

Because we both met each other when we needed to meet each other, if that makes sense.
BOTH of us were hurting terribly after the election; both of us needed one another to get back on our feet and fight the Bush Machine. We now draw strength and can vent about politics whenever we feel down.
It's great finding someone who "gets" my outrage...past partners have never understood how I can get so emotional about politics. But he does.

26. My pic and story
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 11:07 PM by MrScorpio

Okay I'm in Antibes, France, walking down the street with my wife and some friends. We're looking for the beach. We notice two French ladies coming towards us and my friends decide to ask them for directions to said beach. The problem is that they asked them in English. Obviously, the ladies didn't understand. I decided to jump in and ask them in my broken French, "Excusez-moi. Nous sommes des Américains. Où est la mer?"

Well, they light up and go, "Qui, qui, la mer. Allez gauche, puis droit et il y a la mer." Basically, go left and right and there's the sea.

So I go, "Merci beau coup, au revoir."

As the ladies walk away, I look at my companions and they look back at me like I just stepped off some spaceship or something. I say, "Hey! We're in France... you gotta speak FRENCH!"

This is one reason why I rarely had problems in France. Live and learn, people.

Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 11:25 PM by eyepaddle

I just love the camera in hand self-portrait--don't you? At any rate, I had for the first time in my life gotten a job I had dreamed about. This is me in Antarctica in November 2000. Myself and about fifteen other people were on a recreational trip to see a historic hut. (R.F. Scott's Cape Evans Hut--the one they used as a base on the ill-fated trip to the South Pole.) I was trying to get Mount Erebus in the background, as you can see I failed completely in that attempt--but I like the way my neck gaiter is sticking straight up from my hat. I should also say I don't always look that grim--it was just really bright there!

Oh yeah, this is the same trip as the the one where I took the Penguin pic seen earlier today here in the lounge.

158. Thanks,
I don't wanna sound like a blowhard, but I've aways thought that pic looks kinda cool--completely accidental of course! Like I say, I'm trying to get this 12,000 foot mountain; with me in the foreground--and then manage to get my big melon and block out the whole damn mountain. I'm sure there are some DU photo-folks who could offer some informed critique, but I like the sparse composition and the way my face is off to one side.

But that is what I like about the "one handed self-portrait" you're always so surprised by what you actually get.

And damn, I love the blue and white tones of the Icy continent. Man that was a wonderful trip. After I finish my grad degree I'm gonna see about going back. :hi:

46. The red dress, my 8000th post, and whatever.
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 12:10 AM by SarahBelle

So, where do I start with the infamous red dress? This picture was taken just before accompanying my now (almost) ex-husband several months ago. However, it all starts back in September of 2003 and me dipping my toes into proverbial waters of flirtation by the simple mention of me in a red dress. One in which I would have dared never enter prior, not knowing what would ensue or where my mind and heart would take me (or him allegedly). Not knowing it could be a catalyst for both my own empowerment, yet the very unraveling of everything I once knew to be.

Now, a year and half later, a year and a half of soul-searching, a yo-yo of emotions, at least a couple hundred long drawn out letters about everything back and forth, on the literal eve of when it could actually have been, I sit here with a rather puzzled look upon my face wondering what could the possible motivations a man to mess with someone's emotions at a time in which she is most vulnerable? I question many things, yet am faced with another brick wall yet again, though it is I who will likely be perceived to be in the wrong for even mentioning this. Though, it is I who has been respectful of his privacy. It is I who has been understanding one too many times. It is I who is alluded to in those cryptic words and messages only known by me. It is I who has had just about enough. One can only give so much before one realizes there are some people in this world that for whatever reason, have so many fears within themselves, they lose all motivation to be in any way proactive even with someone who they think (they know!) embodies everything they want and that very person truly sees their soul (nothing shallow, nothing superficial) and embraces and loves that- just as they are and just because.

So yes, this is a lovely picture, but I am far more than my picture. I am far more than my face. I am far more than my body. I am far more than my sexuality. I am a mind. I am a spirit. I am a human being on my own journey to somehow make the world a better place, yet be true to myself at the same time even if it means facing my fears. Perhaps that's the toughest balance of all.

So for my 8000th post, that's what I have to say. Perhaps one day I'll have some closure here one way or another. There are many factors I understand. Many I do not. Anyway, I haven't felt much like being around here lately and likely I won't be feeling like being around here much for awhile, so for now, I'll take a few toasts - to the 8000 reasons I have found reason to share with you all of bit of my heart, mind, and voice. :toast:

And to you, S, one with chocolate milk. :toast:

Here I am with a mural I painted in my dorm's basement. It's Britney Spears :) I am now working on a similar style portrait of Audrey Hepburn on the opposite wall, to make kind of a wacky fun house mirror effect (if fun house mirrors could change you into white trash...):

51. This was me

This picture was taken of me on 9/3/04, at about 8:30 in the morning. After the picture was taken, my sister took me to the hospital for gastric bypass surgery. After years and years of yo-yo dieting, and never being able to keep the weight off, I spent a year preparing for this surgery. I took the time to learn about my emotional/compulsive eating, and I had to learn about what eating would be like post-surgery. I had to lose a few pounds before the surgeon would even consider seeing me as a patient.

Since this day, I've lost 73 lbs. I still have at least 50 more lbs. to lose, but I've never been more confident that I will do it, and that I'll be able to keep it off.

We're Philly natives who have lived in Maine for almost 3 years and will NEVER leave.

78. OK, this was taken about 9 months ago,
when I borrowed my pal Freddy's van for a long-weekend getaway up in Virginia. Virginia is for lovers, you know? Anyway, there I am, cruising up I-85, just south of Petersburg, all stoned and listening to Sgt. Pepper and shit, when this damn tanker truck wreck closes the highway and forces me into this weird back-ass nowhere detour. Ooh! And did I mention it was a dark and stormy night? It was. And the bridge was out. And Daphne needed tampons. Anyway, Long story short, I got lost, and I had to stop at this creepy cabin in the woods to ask for directions back to the highway...

a wise choice, i felt, cause now i'm feeling the baldness creeping in even more. i'm probably going to end up looking like comedian David Wain

We took this picture while in the process of creating his very own blog! At 3 years old the kid is already a computer whiz! He surfs the web all by himself, which really hasn't been a problem up until recently, when he learned to type words into search engine boxes. The only words he can type are train, car, truck and duck so we don't really need netnanny software just yet.

Anyway, here's his webspace (still quite vacant, as we just set it up)

Here I am sitting at the wall outside of Graceland (That was Elvis' home for all you kiddies that may not know :) )
My friend was trying to get my muse back because I ran dry of writing tunes so he decided it might be a good idea to take a long weekend road trip to Memphis. Although I had a great time hanging down on Beale St. and all, it didn't really get the creative juices flowing. I am just starting to do a bit of writing. It has been about 5 years... Yikes.

125. We used to peek over that wall.....
I went to Navy 'A' school in Millington and we would get drunk or stoned and drive down to Graceland and peek over the north wall. Never saw E, but once we counted 6 pink cars out back.

I've been back since and even took the tour. Graceland is a really weird place, ain't it?

126. Yeah..it's a bit bizarre
I have been there a few times. I really like Memphis. Graceland cracks me up, but it's a pretty interesting place to go considering a lot of it is what it looked like when E lived there. The Jungle room is a must see.
I might get back there again soon. I have been running out of money these days so I don't know when I'll get a chance. I was thinking of driving to your neck of the woods for the meet-up, but I have no idea about Chicago.

129. Me, standing foolishly close to unexploded mortar shells
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 02:36 PM by MrModerate

In Kuwait, 1992. I was working in the compound where the oil-well firefighters lived, next door to which was a walled experimental date farm. One day we went over to check the date farm out, only to discover that it had been used as a mortar position by the Iraqi army. The troops had pulled out in a hurry when they became convinced that the entire US Marine Corps was going to land on their right flank.

Leaving behind THOUSANDS of mortar rounds.

Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) work in post-war Kuwait (very profitable) had been divvied up on the basis of participation in the coalition that ousted the Iraqis, and our area was assigned to the Bengalis.

So along comes this 7-fingered Bengali Major (not filling me with confidence -- I want my EOD guys to have ALL their fingers) and his team, who promptly announced that it was too dangerous to remove the mortar rounds and they'd have to be detonated in place.

We screamed bloody murder and tried to convince him that we had several hundred firefighters living in a nearby apartment block, and they would NOT be happy to have shards of glass in their evening pudding. But he happily started directing his troops to slap wads of plastique on each pile of rounds, prior to laying out the primacord and detonating the lot of it.

Luckily, one of the people present was able to get ahold of somebody who got ahold of somebody who got ahold of somebody who got ahold of Prince Al-Sabah Something-or-the-other, and the Bengalis were packed off to a less mission-critical disposal task.

Shortly thereafter, along came a Brit EOD team who said "righty-oh, no problem" (that's a quote), and quickly began loading the boxes and loose rounds in a medium sized truck with nary a care in the world (I guess these rounds really are pretty stable). After filling the truck, they directed it to drive off into the desert nearby, and once the driver had gotten clear went up to a passing tank and asked the driver if he could put a spare round into the truck over there, and KABLOOIE! problem solved.

It was a very interesting job.

136. Me and my underware

Gay Pride L.A. 2004. My friend Cindy came over to my house in a fashion panic.

She was worried her skirt was going to lift up on stage and had to borrow a pair of underware from me.

As always she has her onstage banter and told the story. The MC of the event had her auction them off for charity. $50 to AMFAR for a pair of underware of gay man worn and auto graphed by a future rock diva!

This was taken about 5 years ago of me at a fundraiser event for the Humane Society I worked for at that time. On my left is Lucy AKA Lucille AKA Loosewheel. She was a boingy dog until you put a leash on her. It was like a switch had been thrown, she would act like she was welded to the heel position.

Out front is Squeegie. A sweet Maltese, I used to tell people we called her that because we would put her on a stick and wash windows with her.

Digitally excised from the photo is my ex-wife. Thanks to Harry for the Photoshop expertise.

156. Me

This is me outside the Royal Tyreel Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller Alberta. It was taken last April. There is a trail in the badlands outside of the museum where you can wander around and pretend to find fossils. The area is pretty much picked clean and completely devoid of any fossils whatsoever. I was ahead of the group slightly, and decided to relax, and I'm not actually sleeping in this photo. Despite the sunny skies, it's still April in Alberta and pretty dang cold.

it was about December 2000 - during the Pres. election recounts and all that - this pic is from a commentary i had published in the South Jersey newspaper The Courier Post. My daughter was only a few months old at the time - and i had spent every day at home with her while i watched MSNBC 24/7 religiously to keep up with the lawsuits, etc.......it was literally the first time i became interested in politics and KNEW Bush was stealing it, even back then. I also knew at this time that if he won, we would be at war.

160. Here I am building a snowman with my kids
It was one of those freak snows we get occasionally in the Dallas area. The snow was almost completely gone in 24 hours.

A few days later this pic was taken right before surgery. The pic doesn't indicate it but I was very sick at this time last year with cancer.

However, it was a rather benign form of cancer. After surgery and radiation I am cancer free but extremely tired most of the time. My metabolism was screwed up by the cancer. I've put on 20 pounds since the surgery. Here is what I look like after work.

I'm still trying to get back my natural smile. It seems to have lost me lately. I am back to running again. Yeah!!!
