I was just told to have a blessed day
It was from my insurance salesman's assistant. I know she probably had the best of intentions, but I would have preferred "have a nice day".

3. Yes, I know how you feel.
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 01:18 PM by RebelOne
There is a lady at the check-out counter at my local Big Lots who always says that to me. Really bugs me. I don't want to say anything because she is really a nice lady.

6. If you really want a "quiet consumer" response
Get another insurance company and don't tell the original why unless your agent asks. When asked, tell them the assistant told you "have a blessed day" and you took offense and that you are the type of customer who simply leaves quietly when offended.

13. Sigh. Just accept the good intention and say...
"Thanks. You have a nice day, too."

Why does so much inocuous good intent have to be greeted by such hostile intolerance? Seriously. Live and let live.

15. Absolutely
This isn't a separation of church and state issue. It's not evangelism. Even if the phrase rubs you the wrong way, look for the intention behind it and respond nicely, or maybe with one of the clever comebacks suggested above.

And at the risk of a flame war, I believe this is the reason Democrats get the reputation for being godless hostile nitpickers.

26. I have to agree
It also sounds to me like fingernails on the chalkboard, but I'm reminded of the intentions. I was Treasurer for a candidate for Supt. of Schools last year. A very nice, well educated, highly qualified woman, and a staunch Democrat. We worked together on a daily basis, and she always told me that. I figured, fuck it, she's just being nice.

18. I totally agree
What's so horrible about someone ending a converstion like that?

My response?

" Thank you, and have a nice day also"

What's the big deal?

I thought we were a band of tolerant people.

22. THANK YOU!
I, for one, am getting tired of seeing this subject come up at DU. The person saying it has no ill intentions; just say nothing or say something like, "Have a nice day." Why be so nasty?? :eyes:

23. it's not just good intentions, the person is saying it on purpose
and is essentially throwing their religion in your face. it's analagous to saying "may my God bring down his blessing upon you." i'm sick of right-wingers trying to hide their bullshit behind coded phrases. ex. RW spin: "Harry Reid is an obstructionist"- no, Harry Reid is calling you on your bullshit, and not even calling you on that much at that. It's like saying "the Democrat Party," it allows people to feign innocence when you call them on it, but the intent is there just the same. FUCK. THEM.

27. How do you know it's not just good intentions?
My grandmother, used to say that phrase all of the time, and she wasn't really even a church-goer! It was just a phrase, it was a nice way of saying have a nice day!

Not everyone has ulterior motives, there are some people out there who are genuinely nice.

Myself, I am agnostic, so the phrase does not bother me, I tend to turn the other cheek and tell folks to have a nice day as well.

28. there's the off-chance that it could be, but i still don't want to hear it
and don't feel that i'm in the wrong to say "thank you for your sentiments, but that one rubs me the wrong way. how about "have a nice day" or something like that instead?" maybe that's a bit presumptious, but i also find it extremely presumptious to throw god in my face...

29. I can agree with that...
But honestly, I can think of dozens of other phrases that would really get my blood boiling.

Whats wrong with not saying anything at all? Must we always make a "point" or a "statement" ? As another poster said, live and let live?

shit in my face :P sorry, maybe i'm just not a perfect person, but i don't believe that you have to "pick your battles." be nice as much as possible, but if someone throws shit at me, i'll throw it right back at them :7

31. Okay... I understand.
I see your point. I don't really like the phrase myself, but I don't let it bother me. I try to understand where the person was coming from and feel it out so to speak. Most of my "blessed day" comments in recent years were made by people whom I believe had good intentions.

Now say the word "fag*ot" or "nig*er" and I will have you screaming on the ground begging for a "blessed day" ! :P

They can invoke any god or force of nature they wish. Maybe it will work. I need all the goodwill I can get. Except satan and his minions, that help I can do without.

33. In my community its largely a racial thing....I live in a 75% black town
Many black women work as cashiers and I'm frequently told to "Have a blessed day" as I'm given my change. They are religious but they aren't proselytizing-its just part of the culture. I certainly take no offense and wouldn't think of responding rudely. I just smile and thank them.
