What's your dog(s)' level of friendliness with strangers?
I didn't make this a poll since some have more than 1 dog. For each dog, choose an option among those below. My dog Reba is level 7 for sure.

Level 7: Very friendly; loves everyone

Level 6: Usually friendly; there are a few strangers the dog doesn't like for some reason - or likes all people, but without enthusiasm

Level 5: Friendly with most or all, but will protect you or be wary

Level 4: Sometimes friendly; sometimes not

Level 3: Friendly with people it knows only; may bite others

Level 2: Friendly with people it knows only; quite vicious with those it doesn't know

Level 1: Only likes its master(s)

Or, you can choose "other."

1. I would say level 3, with reservations.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 09:46 PM by Seldona
He has never bitten anyone. Would not have a dog who did.

But until he gets the ok from me or the wife, his hair stands on end and he growls.

Being that he has some pit in him, at least it looks like it, many people are intimidated.

But he is a big baby really.

2. My dog
is only friendly with my family. If you do not live in my house, he does not want you here. If my daughters are playing outside, people never get out of their car unless I come out.

3. Shit, my apartment got broke into and Hank brought them toys.
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 09:50 PM by hippiechick
Came home and found the place wide open, most of my valuables gone, and Hank sitting there wagging his tail ... toys from his 'bucket' scattered all over the floor - as if he followed the perps around trying to get them to play fetch. He's what you'd call ... AN IDIOT.

But I wouldn't have him any other way.

5. I have a Sharpei mix.
I would say level 3 but doesn't bite. Barks like crazy at strangers and acts a little aggressive. I'm worried that she will become more aggressive as she gets older. Sharpeis are know to be territorial and she has definitely become more territorial in the last year. She is two.

Anyone have a Sharpei?

22. The only Sharpei I 've met attacked my Australian Shepherd
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 10:36 PM by marzipanni
The Sharpei was a funny pup who came into my friend (his neighbor's) house and barked wildly at his own reflection in a mirror covered wall!
Later, when we were going to my car he came over and jumped my male Aussie, who bent down and grabbed the Sharpei's head in his mouth... one canine tooth appeared to be almost in his eye- fortunately the small hole in the Sharpei's scalp healed that week after my friend and I applied some neo-sporin.

26. He is definitely a 7.
He thinks everyone loves him whether they do or not.

However, he is a hell of a watchdog with a big bark.

But near dangerous-looking people the dogs names become Fang and Killer.

10. aggressive if one approaches my fence, but accepting if I okay it
Kodi the kuvasz, at 150 pounds does not need to act aggressive for people to be wary.

Abba the kuvasz will bark and act like he will eat you until i come out and tell him it is okay.

Aja the kuvasz will be more friendly, but still suspicious until the person gets in the gate with my approval.

Dr J the lab and Luckie the mutt are less aggressive, but will bark until i tell them to stop.

Little Bit the chihuahua will bark until the person is accepted by me.

Once inside the fence, Luckie will jump you and want to be petted, Dr J will hang around looking for a pet, Abba will stick his nose in your butt(man, i lve that dog!), Aja will want attention and pets, so she will bark and push the others away, kodi will be sitting on the porch and will let you appraoch her if I accept the person, if not she will just bark and act like she's going to have you for lunch. Little Bit will hang back and wait for the dust to clear so she does not get stepped on by the big dogs.

None have ever bitten a person in approximately the 60 plus composite dogs years I have had them.

12. We have two
Brandy is a level 5 for sure.

Where's the option for "is scared of it's own shadow and will bark at it, and maybe bite it"? THAT would be our "Sunny" (she got the name when she was still a friendly and quite happy little puppy).

13. Blue will tear your face off. Joe will roll over and ask you to rub his
belly and Winky will only love you after she's known you a really long time and if I'm not around.

My dogs, I just love em. Blue tried to eat a lovely frenchie when I was taking her home from the beauty parlor today. The idiot walking the cutie frenchy didn't have the dog on a leash... the little dog made a bee-line for Blue and I had to yell at the guy to put his FUCKING dog on a leash.. What an idiot. I told her she was going to kill his dog, and he just said "thanks!"

Dang. I don't take her out often, but the ones at risk are the ones not on leash. She can be so nasty... (rescue dog with issues)

I may have to put her down before we move overseas. Her issues are just so broad and perilous. She's good with us, but can be so vicious with others that I worry whomever she's placed with won't follow her rules... and that someone will get bitten or another dog will get hurt. Blue bit Winky's leg while going after a snack and that cost me over $3,000.... heart breaking....

15. 7+++
I took my new pup, Scout to the superbowl party yesterday (her first social event with lots of people) and everyone fell madly in love with her. I had several people threaten to take her home with them. I thought Aki was the nicest dog in the world, but Scout is giving her serious competition.

Scout even made good friends with a 1 year old baby. The kid was scared at first since she only knows big dogs, but by the end of the evening she was enticing scout to play with her. :)

18. He's weird
He barks at everyone walking down the street, goes crazy if he sees another dog alone outside (why does that dog get to run around without a leash and I don't?) In the car he barks at walkers/joggers and dogs in other cars. Goes nuts if he sees a motorcycle. The mailman comes to the door and you think he's going to tear him to pieces. But in actual hands-on contact with someone he's fine. He loves attention and is gentle with small children and smaller dogs (he's a standard poodle) but he'll rough-house with dogs his own size. He only snapped at one person, someone he'd never seen before who tried to get into the backseat of the car with him. The 'snapee' later turned out to be a real jerk, so the doggie might have known something I didn't.

30. My canine was level 3.
Some dude asked if my dog bites, I said no.

The dude then proceeded to put his hand near her head, at which point she barked and snapped at him.

The dude said that I said she didn't bite. Oh well, we continued on our walk.

Hey, I never told the dude it was ok to pet her.
