Good article about a Chicago mob hit in broad daylight that I witnessed
My mother just had foot surgery at a foot hospital north of O'Hare airport in 1981 so my father and I were on our way up to see her and then afterwords the two of us were going to take in the afternoon matinee at Sportsman's Park. Just as we came up to the Hinsdale oasis we both noticed a huge fireball to the left of the road and we could see what was left of a vehicle coming down the cloverleaf and rolling to a stop while on fire. We were both amazed to say the least. Here is the update to the actual story. Its kind of long but it is well written and interesting reading.

Mobster blows lid off '81 hit

When the gangsters slaughtered trucking executive Michael Cagnoni, they punctuated their violence with unusual boldness.

The killers did it in broad daylight.

In a quiet Chicago suburb.

And with a car bomb that showered the road with shredded steel and body parts.

The 1981 mob hit shook the idyllic west suburb of Hinsdale and marked a new sophistication in the mob's bomb-making efforts. A clever remote-control device was used to trigger the bomb under the seat of Cagnoni's silver Mercedes. snip

"Whoever did this wanted to send a message," one law enforcement source said.

"It's one thing to shoot someone coming out of a tavern at midnight. It's another thing to splatter someone across the Tri-State Tollway in the middle of the morning."

1. That's Chicago for you.
I lived there 27 years before moving to Tx in 1984. I still love Chicago though. Especially my Bears.
