Man Bites Head Off Parrot

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Volusia County officials say a New Smyrna Beach man is accused of biting the head off a parrot.

Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson says 34-year-old Bruce Coates is charged with animal cruelty. Coates told deputies that he was drinking at a party early Sunday morning and couldn't remember what happened.

Witnesses told deputies the bird was on another person's shoulder when Coates grabbed the parrot and bit the head off. The parrot's owner called the sheriff's office to report the incident.

Officials say Coates did apologize and offered to replace the parrot.
