YAY for me!! I FINALLY moved into San Francisco!!!
:bounce::party::bounce::party::bounce::party::bounce::party:

it's great to be out of Walnut Fucking Creek at last, after 3 bloody years

the irony is that I'm living on Bush St... my republican, army-seargent dad says that's the best part about it :puke:

was up till 4am last might moving, 2 hours of sleep on a bare box-spring, then back up at 6am to go to work :hangover:

but it's done now!!! :D :D :D

2. I'm going to be staying on Bush Street in a couple weeks
when I visit SF for a conference. I thought it was an interesting cosmic joke to have me stay on Bush Street, of all places.

What's the area like?

8. depends on which block you are on
the eastern end of Bush St is Union Square, and as you venture west it goes through Chinatown, then into some crappy areas...

I'm roughtly right in the middle... far enough from Union Square that I don't have yuppies everywhere, but close enough that I'm not ducking bullets either

my black has lots of little delis and shops and things

14. How is public transportation there?
I've never to been to San Francisco...I lived in Southern California back in the early '70s, but we never went further north than LA.

So I'm clueless as to what it's like in SF, although I've always wanted to go.

15. I'm just a short walk to BART, I work in the east bay
and while there is no subway, there are plenty of busses, trains, cabs, cable-cars, etc

29. Actually there is a subway.
In addition to Bart, there are a couple of miles of muni trains that run under ground - mostly under Market street from the Embarcadero to the Castro, then out to the outlying areas, where they run on the surface. A Muni card is a bargain - just $45 a month and you can ride the buses, subways, streetcars and cable cars, as well as BART Within the city limits.

44. East Bay White Flight?
Tell me about it.. I worked as a consultant out in Pleasanton, about 15 miles south of Walnut Creek. Talk about truth in advertising,
I used to call it "unpleasanton." Shudder.

That whole area around Walnut Creek downtown seems to have been built by Disney and Borders Books. Yuck! So many right-wingers at jobs I've done out there, it's definitely a red county.

Welcome to a much better area code !

26. Congrats and welcome to the city! My son's day care is on Bush.
I can't tell you how many times we've thought of proposing changing the name to the city council. But there are those fun "end Bush" stickers in the form of street signs around.

We moved to the bay area a year ago, and we ALMOST moved to Walnut Creek. I'm so glad we decided to live in the city. It's great here - have a good time.

34. Congrats from another San Francisco resident
I've driven through that part of the East Bay where Walnut Creek is a couple of times. Parts of it aren't bad if you have a car and like the wilderness, but other parts (especially Alamo, Danville and Blackhawk) are absolute gated-community wasteland.

I can't understand for the life of me how anyone with lots of money would voluntarily choose to live in such sterile, soulless places. In some ways they're just as depressing as slums like East Oakland or Hunter's Point, if not as impoverished or dangerous.

I've wanted to live in San Francisco (or just about anywhere in the northern half of California, I'm not that picky) for at least a decade. I so wish I had just done it years ago. Now I'm married, we have a condo, we have jobs. None of these things are impossible to overcome but I'm married to a man who simply cannot make a rash decision. Everything has to be completely logical and thought out, and California is just too risky (job market) and expensive (housing market) for him. We've looked into applying for jobs from here but almost everyone says "Call us when you've moved out here." There is no way my husband would move without a job. If it were up to me, I'd sell out condo, move out west, and use the profit from the condo to live until we found work. We stand to make $80-100 thousand on our condo so this seems more than feasible to me, but if I even suggested that to him he'd choke to death laughing. Sigh...

Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread. Congrats on the move.

I consider myself quite lucky that I had a job waiting for me when I moved out here... and if I was not renting, I don't know what I'd be doing, since housing is so bloody expensive out here
